AAAAAAAAAAARGH!
(This expression is meant to suggest theological and aesthetic disapproval. Well, actually, revulsion).

Well, I'd have to say I'd prefer one of these to the banner the altar girl processed with my first Easter Mass in the Church. Made of PVC pipe with the UPC still visible, and ribbons dangling with little jingle bells at the end.

Hi Ed, I don't like them in church, but I do like the small ones that people display on their lawns. A couple of weeks ago on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, Father spoke about the many horrible images modern man is exposed to on tv,etc. All the more reason to venerate icons! I think these lawn banners are another good way to display one's faith and perhaps evangelize.

I've seen banners like that one in some Protestant churches.

Hi, Wolfgang;
Christ Is Risen!
I take your point, and these banners are certainly preferable to the ugliness to which we are constantly exposed. Our society seems to become more and more shamelessly pornographic regarding violence as well as sex. I live in NYC, so perhaps I am more exposed to all that than most.
I am not sure,however,that I can approve of them at all; I think they tend toward a trivialization of sacred art and thus of the Faith (and here I mean Christianity in general, not only Orthodoxy or Catholicism). After all, any kind of art that depicts Our Lord, Our Lady, the Saints or refers to the Holy Mysteries must be considered as at least an attempt at "sacred art", must it not? Or am I just being a snob and making too much of thes cute little things?

It would not surprise me if Houston had more adult businesses than churches.
The people who seemed to have put that banner together or they who buy it for their church tend to recognize only the sacraments of baptism and marriage. They have their eyes closed to church history and don't hear of the saints.
