With the blessing of Metropolitan Basil, formation of a Committee on Scouting for the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh is beginning. An announcement in the Byzantine Catholic World will be forthcoming, but if anyone wants information they can pm me here. To become a member one must be a registered Scouter in the Boy Scouts of America and a member in goodstanding of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. General information about the realtionship between Scouting and the Catholic Church and the functions of the Committee can be found on the website of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting: http://www.nccs-bsa.org/index.php

Fr. Deacon Lance,
Fr. Deacon Stan is an Assistant Scout Master. Though he has not been active lately, due to his health, let him know if he can help in anyway.
Like you as an Eagle Scout, having two sons of our own that are Eagle Scouts, we know Scouting is 'invaluable' throughout life. Long after they are out, gone, and doing other things, you still witness the effect that the comittment to being the best and acheiving the most they could has/is having on their lives.

A fantastic endeavor!
I look back on my own time in the Boy Scouts and cannot find the words to say how worthwhile it was. I am also glad that there is now a Byzantine Catholic award that can be achieved. It didn't exist when I was a scout, but I did earn both the "Ad Altare Dei" and "Pope Pius XII" awards. I remember that, because I was a Byzantine Catholic, the instructor went well beyond the extra mile to adapt my curriculum with texts from "On the Orthodox Faith" (Damascene).
There are not enough positive words to describe Scouting.

Thank you for the endorsement John. I also earned Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII. The Committee hopes to prepare Byzantine Catholic awards for all levels of Scouting.

Three-palm Eagle Scout here as well, SPL, JASM and ASM. I also earned Parvuli Dei (as a Cub), Ad Altare Dei and Pius XII - I also predated the Eastern Catholic award. The only Eastern Catholic award I know of is "Light is Life" but I have been out of active Scouting for a bit.

Three-Palm? Excellent! I only got the first. Not sure why I never went for the rest since I had the merit badges.
I forgot all about Parvuli Dei! Yes, I had that one also.
And summer camp... and all the three day weekends every few months at Goose Pond in the Poconos, the Boy Scout Camp...

Fr. Deacon Lance,
My son Michael will receive his Parvuli Dei Saturday night . . . but has already crossed over into Boy Scouts. I understand he must be a Scout for a year before he is eligible to sign up for Light is Life, but I'm writing because he IS a Byzantine Catholic Boy Scout now.

Great to hear it! Please send us pictures if you take them and they may end up on the website. Be sure to include your parish name and any other information for us. I'm finalizing the photo release, and should have it up on the website today or tomorrow.
