Though I wouldn't use all the same superlatives, LOL :), I agree.
A simple psalm tone is all that is neccessary. That's what my parish does and I'm not quite sure what to even sing when I hear these more "elaborate"(you can translate that as "goofy") responsorial settings used.

I'd actually label current widespread format as the single biggest obstacle to prayerful worship in American RC churches today. The entire beauty, wisdom, and prayer of the psalm is lost, obscured, and obstructed by the singer's performance.
