Cardinal to Bring Alexy II a Papal Message
VATICAN CITY, MAY 21, 2008 (Zenit.org). - Cardinal Walter Kasper left for Moscow today to take a message from Benedict XVI to Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia.

Cardinal Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, will be in Russia through May 30. The trip was undertaken at the invitation of Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, the president of the Department of External Affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate, reported the pontifical council.

The program of the visit includes an inaugural celebration for the feast of Corpus Christi at the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow.

The cardinal will be received by Patriarch Alexy II in an encounter during which the cardinal will give him the Pope's message.

The pontifical council president will also participate in a celebration for the name day of Metropolitan Kirill.

Cardinal Kasper will make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Kazan, to venerate the icon of Our Lady, which he himself brought to Russia in 2004 in the name of Pope John Paul II.

A visit to the monastery of Diveyevo is also scheduled. There, the cardinal will venerate a saint of the Orthodox Church, Seraphim of Sarov, particularly beloved by the Russian people.

Hmmmmmm......

All at once... the UOC-KP is meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch's people. The Ecumenical Patriarch is meeting with the president of the Ukraine (I know someone will complain about that leading "the") and discussing a unified "Ukrainian Church." Cardinal Kasper is going to meet with hierarchs of the Russian Church to discuss many things including a meeting between the Pope of Rome and Patriarch of Moscow (according to Moscow Catholic Archbishop Pezzi). Moscow denies the fruits of Ravenna. Not a slow news week.

And add to this that the ROC will glorify Saints Anthony (Smirnitsky) of Voronezh AND St John Maximovych of Shanghai and San Francisco for universal Orthodox veneration next month during the MP Synod.

AND that the UOC-MP has glorified, last week, 48 new Ukrainian Orthodox saints.

Not bad for a country that USED to be called "the Ukraine!"

Christ is Risen!
Indeed He is Risen!

Wow. The Ukraine is still producing many holy Saints.

Through the prayers of Saints Anthony and John, O Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and save us.

May His Eminence's trip be fruitful.

What I am particularly interested in is his visit to the Diyevevo monastery to venerate the relics of Saint Seraphim.

The sight of a Roman Catholic cardinal kissing the relics of a Russian Orthodox saint- that is an ecumenical milestone in my book! smile

When the late Jaime Cardinal Sin of Manila became the first Roman Catholic Cardinal to visit the then-Soviet Union in modern times -- in 1987, to be exact -- he venerated the relics of several Russian Orthodox saints.

I hope that the sight of a Russian Church that is jealously protective of its grandiose liturgical patrimony, with 700+ monasteries full of young monks and nuns in full black habits, would induce some soul-searching in the Curia Romana with regards to the importance of liturgical tradition and the relevance of ancient monastic disciplines.

Dear Friends,

In fact, RC prelates have been attending Orthodox canonizations of saints for years (e.g. St Herman of Alaska). They venerate the icons, relics and take icons as mementos with them.

St Seraphim of Sarov is also venerated at the biritual Benedictine monastery of Chevetogne where His relics were brought by ROC authorities not too long ago for veneration by the Benedictine monks there in their Byzantine-Slavonic Church.

The ROC press did a very nice write-up about it and discussed the "growing veneration of St Seraphim of Sarov by RC's." They also commended the Benedictine Chevetogne monastery for their work with the Eastern Church and said that their promotion of the Byzantine-Slavonice Rite (then they added "Orthodox") is not to try and convert Orthodox but to genuinely introduce Orthodoxy to the West.

Very nice, all around.

In addition, one will readily find St Seraphim of Sarov listed as a Catholic saint in many Catholic calendars, even online ones.

His icon of the Joy of all Joys is a Western one in fact, one of several western ones brought to Russia as gifts by Western visitors that were later declared miraculous (including a Western picture of Our Lady of the Three Joys discussed by Prof. Poselianin in his "Bogomater" and the Theotokos of the "Scapular" (sic).

Cardinal Kasper is walking on a path that is already well-trodden by Western Christians.

Forgive those of us who are old enough to have seen a bit of Ostpolitik in dealing with the UGCC if we do not jump on the "Cheer Wagon" for Cardinal Kasper too soon (remember the "Unfriendly Ghost" and his back-door negotiations without even notifying the Synod???).

It is so good to hear from you again, Alex!

Here are some pictures from the visit of the relics of Saint Seraphim to the Benedictine Monastery in Chevetogne.

It is proper to just use the word "Ukraine" and not using the leading "the" as in "the Ukraine" when referring to the motherland.
Haha, you asked for it, I even put it into bold to remind you!

Pity that Chevetogne is now down to just 27 monks, that number includes both the Latin and the Byzantine communities in that monastery

POPE TO ALEXIS II: GROWING CLOSENESS BETWEEN US

VATICAN CITY, 30 MAY 2008 (VIS) - The Holy Father has written a Message to His Holiness Alexis II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, delivered by Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, during a meeting with the Patriarch.

In the text of his English-language Message, the Pope writes that the cardinal's visit to Russia "offers me a welcome opportunity to extend my cordial greetings, to express my esteem for your ministry in the Russian Orthodox Church and to restate my appreciation for your commitment to fostering relations between Catholics and Orthodox".

"It is with joy", the Holy Father adds, "that I reflect on the experience of growing closeness between us, accompanied by the shared desire to promote authentic Christian values and to witness to our Lord in ever deeper communion. I think with gratitude of the recent visit of Your Holiness to Strasbourg and Paris, and the warm welcome given to the Catholic archbishop of the archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow during the Christmas celebrations last year.

"Another sign of fraternity and friendship towards the Catholic Church is to be seen in the invitation extended to Cardinal Kasper by His Eminence Kirill, metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, president of the Department for External Church Affairs of the Patriarchate of Moscow, to visit that eparchy on the occasion of his name-day. This is not only a sign of personal goodwill, but also a gesture towards the Catholic Church which Cardinal Kasper represents".

"During his time in Russia", writes the Pope, "Cardinal Kasper will visit Kazan to venerate the icon of the Mother of God which my beloved predecessor, Pope John Paul II, conveyed to Your Holiness through the good offices of Cardinal Kasper. ... This icon bears a likeness to all the other venerable icons of the Mother of God. ... It also offers an opportunity for encounter with Muslims, who show great respect for Mary, the Mother of God".

The Pope notes haw the Russian Patriarch "has been increasingly committed to dialogue with other Christians and the members of other religions" and reaffirms his own "deep gratitude" for, and "prayerful interest" in, "the signs of friendship and trust which your Church and its representatives have demonstrated in various ways".

Reiterating his gratitude to Alexis II for his dialogue "with different ecclesial, religious and social bodies", Benedict XVI concludes: "May the Risen Saviour grant you health, peace and inner joy, and may he bring us closer to each other, that we may undertake together our journey towards full communion in Him".
