Our house cat (Felix) went missing for a day or so last week, and then returned, seemingly none the worse for wear and smiling like the cat that swallowed the canary - but declining to provide any information about where she had been.

You're confused? Poor Felix probably "disappeared" to the kitty psychologist for a long session to figure out exactly what gender it really is.=^.^= biggrin

That's a bit scary. Most skunks will run away from humans unless they are cornered. But, then, there was the one that chased me out of the public park one morning. I was taught that only rabid skunks would be that aggressive. When I used to hunt small game, we'd shoot a skunk that was too friendly--can't be too careful.

Good point...I would have never picked up on that! smile

As for the 'cat' in the posting, those skunks are truly beautiful creatures..I have seen them around my house in New York many times, and smelled them in the area even more! I always think to myself, usually while driving, 'hmmm...burnt toast?!?!....NO--it is a SKUNK'!

One must have sprayed one time right below my second story bedroom window, because I awoke in the middle of the night to a somewhat burning sensation in my nasal passages, along with the requisite 'burnt toast' smell...or atleast that is what I think it smells like!

One time my sheltie got sprayed in the back yard. I ran out to a great crying and yelping on her part. Silly dog didn't have the smarts to keep quiet as I do when spotting a skunk..instead, she barked at it, and got hers...

The one spot where the spray was concentrated, on her cheek, took months and months to dissapate completely, despite many baths.

ALICE:

I've been told that one should bathe with tomato juice--that's supposed to help get the spray and the scent off--whether the dog or oneself.

This could be a lost domestic skunk from the description.

Yes, there are actually people who have the scent gland removed and keep them as pets. I believe they even use litter boxes.

To clarify the situation - yes, Felix is a female. We named the kitten "Felix" before investigating - and by that time we had a written a theme-song "Felix, the Friendly Cat", so it seem a bit late to change her name to Felicia! It doesn't seem to disturb her.

Since Felix has been spayed, that would indeed be remarkable!

Bob,

We tried that...we tried everything...the odor did not trail with her, but when I would hug and kiss her ( wink ), the scent was still stubbornly imbedded for a couple of months.

In Christ,
Alice
