Help identifying this church

Photo was taken either in NYC or New Jersey during a family trip in the 1960's. This icon is over the entrance to a fairly modern looking church. Any help would be appreciated.

That could be (I'm just guessing) St. Mary's B.C. Church in lower Manhattan, NYC. Same type of architecture.

Deacon Robert,

You were spot on! I found a matching photo on a NYC architecture website. Their photo also shows the church's very unusual bell tower which I have a picture of, but wasn't sure the two were related.

I'm in the midst of scanning old family photos onto CD's for one and all and trying to do a thorough job.

Thanks so much, Barbara

The picture is of St Mary's Catholic Church of the Byzantine Rite.

The church was consecrated in June 1963. At that time Father Dano was the pastor.

The "new" St Mary's is on 15th street and second avenue in Manhattan.

It is part of the Passaic eparchy.

The old St Mary's was on 13th street between second and third avenue.

Hope that helps

St-Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church is located in the 'Gramercy' area of Manhattan just outside of the boundaries of the 'East Village' which has been a historic 'dumping ground' for Eastern European immigrants. The 'Slavs of New York' web site has an artistic version of the church in it's 'heading':

Technically, St Mary's is just one block north of the east village.

Gramercy Park residents do not consider 15th street a part of their area/ But who am I to quibble.

At the time the church was built, it was featured in Daily News (daily paper in NY) magazine section as being a traditional church with a modern flair.
