Any traditional gifts given when a new priest comes to the parish?

Ministry-related items: Vestments, Vessels, Books.
I think a warm welcome and a friend greatly surpass any of those, but fortunately they are not mutually exclusive.

Get him a personal devotional icon! Or like Memo said, vestments et al. would be good, but some can get really expensive, as you know.

A genuine painted icon is expensive, and so are good vestments. Since Priests are not paid much money, either - or both - gifts will be more than welcome (particular if he is given a share of the choice of the subject of the icon and the materials, size, and cut of the vestments).

These handpainted icons from Greece are *very* reasonable in price, and they will keep in touch with you as to the progress and delivery date...I have ordered from them myself: http://www.hellenic-art.com/sterling/jesusp.htmNote that the sterling silver icons are just as reasonable in price! From my experience in Greece, giving and receiving sterling silver icons for occassions as a gift is sometimes considered even more special..as they would be extremely expensive in the U.S.

Attended his first Divine Liturgy with us last night. He proved to be quite well spoken. Being Ukrainian and only visiting for the summer I had no idea what to expect. Most interesting (I know I'm getting off topic here) was that Ukraine has a glut of priests; men graduating from seminary with no parish to go to. Makes me want to go teach English for a year in preparation for their mass immigration to the US (a la the Irish priests of old).
