Perhaps Mayfield is a now titular see in ROCOR. As lovely as Mayfield may be, I can't imagine a bishop taking residence there! I'd love to know what some folks in nearby South Canaan think about this! Dave

Coming from the east, there's an Interstate (84?); get off before Scranton at Dunmore and meander through Olyphant and Jermyn; Mayfield is towards Carbondale.
There's another interstate leading into the neighborhood from Binghamton, so going to/from Jordanville should be relatively easy.

That interstate would be I-81.
His parents were Latvian Orthodox refugees, huh...

Yes, it is I-84 that comes to Scranton from the east--think it starts in Manhattan, NY. I-81 is the N/S route from Binghamton. BOB

There used to be a decent restaurant called "the Top of the Eighties" giving a view of the cross of both highways. Don't know if it's still there. But I wonder if it could be reworked into a 3-bar cross!

Father Serge:
Father bless!1
I'll ask my daughter when she calls tonight. We get there often but I have never run into the place.

"Is the new bishop an Old Believer himself (if he was the one standing with the choir on the men's side then he sure looked like one)?"
I think the safe assumption is yes. He wears the Old Rite Skufia, Lestovka, and Poyas and used the Podruchnik when he made prostrations.

Vladika John was the gardener at Jordanville when I lived there. He was responsible for growing and canning all the vegetables that fed the Brotherhood all winter. He is fluent in Koine Greek and Church Slavonic, as well as Russian, although his native languages were Latvian and English. He was of the Nikonian rite whilst I lived there, and I know that he was raised in the Nikonian Rite, but was a great admirer of the Old Rite. So I am not at all surprised in that he was consecrated according to the Old Rite. He is a friend of mine. Mnogaya i Blagaya Leta Vladika!

I'd love to know what some folks in nearby South Canaan think about this! Dave Vladika-elect Archmandrite George is a megaloschema monk from Athos, who lives at Jordanville, as well as being Igumen of Holy Cross Skete in Wayne, West Virginia. My best guess is that he would reside in Jordanville, a short 1 1/2 hour drive away from Mayfield, and commute there when necessary. As far as the thinking going on in South Canaan, well, I will hold judgment on until the results of the study on the American Metropolia is complete later this year. All I will say now is that it will be good to have a Russian Orthodox bishop in Pennsylvania again. Alexandr

Archimandrite George is a megaloschema monk? Intriguing. Aren't schemamonks supposed to be hermits who live in fasting most of the time? Are there other schemamonks who are also bishops (aside from future Bishop George and Metropolitan Juvenaly)?
Well, Bishop Tikhon (Mollard) looks "Russian" enough.

You can walk from one to the other! In response to prior posts by other posters, Mayfield is now easily reachable by the "Casey Highway" (named after the late pro-life Governor), which is an "interstate"-type road with no traffic lights, etc. It is "new Route 6", as opposed to "Business Route 6"-why not assign a different number?-outsiders get confused). The "Casey" connects with Interstate 81. Interstate 84 is also close. That runs between the Scranton area and Rhode Island. I will have to call Fr. John Sorochka to get the "scoop". In Christ, Dn. Robert

Dn. Robert,
Being a staunch Pennsylvanian (if such is possible), I totally understand the distinction between BR-6 and "new route 6". My PA-formed mind makes this automatic connection: Take new route 6, no traffic lights. We call it a "bypass", as I'm sure many of you do.

The official news release and photos of the consecration can be found on this link. [ synod.com] In IC XC, Father Anthony+
Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai
