VATICAN CITY (June 26) - The devil may wear Prada but the pope does not. According to the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, the bright red loafers that Pope Benedict XVI wears are not designed by the Milanese fashion house, as has long been rumored...

At the risk of appearing dense, I don't grasp why anybody would care what brand of shoes the Pope wears! After all, they're his feet, not mine.

Branding. You get the pope to wear your brand of shoes, and wow ! Every Catholic and 'wannabe' will be buying a pair. It would be a marketing bonanza for the manufacturer.

My comment was meant to be sarcastic. I should have put a roll eyes after it but I can't find them. I couldn't care less where he gets his shoes.

I thought it was old news that they were specially designed by an artisan.

And to think I have spent all this time not caring what Pope Benedict wears. I must have missed out on something. wink

Well--when he was here, even Raymond Arroyo covering his arrival on EWTN, announced his Prada shoes.

It is my understanding that most people couldn't afford a pair of Prada shoes. So I wouldn't worry about a huge fashion trent because of what the Pope wears!

I don't see many Catholics strollin' around in ermine-lined mozzettas!

Goodness - does Arroyo think he is conducting a fashion show?

If the Pope should be wearing special shoes - perhaps because he needs more support given the amount of time he must spend on his feet at his age - I would take it for granted that some benefactor provides them.

Really, what difference does it make? I'm sure that if you asked him for them, he would give them to you!

Rome, Jun 26, 2008 (CNA).- The Vaticans Master of Papal Liturgical Ceremonies, Msgr. Guido Marini explained that the distinct ancient liturgical ornaments and vestments being used by Pope Benedict XVI underscore the continuity of the current liturgical celebration with that which has characterized the life of the Church in the past. ...

... I would like to note that the Pope does not always use ancient liturgical vestments. He often uses modern ones. The important thing is not that they are ancient or modern but that they are beautiful and dignified, aspects that are important for all liturgical celebrations, he added.

Asked about accusations that Pope Benedict XVI is trying to impose pre-conciliar models, Msgr. Marini said, that terms such as pre-conciliar or post-conciliar are used by some with the intent of indicating a discontinuity in the Churchs journey, I consider [the terms] to be erroneous and typical of very narrow ideological visions.

There are ancient things and there are new things that belong to the treasure of the Church of the ages and as such they are taken into consideration, he continued, adding that not everything that is new is true, and neither is everything that is ancient. The truth transcends the old and the new and we must tend towards it without prejudice.

Probably closer to a monk than to a liturgically equipped Bishop.
