Friends,
I am leaving today for Washington, D.C. and during the next six weeks I'll be interning for one of Georgia's two U.S. senators at the Senate.
I was wondering about any good churches/liturgies to attend during my stay in Washington that are within the city and at least somewhat centrally located (Catholic and Orthodox alike). I understand that there are many great churches, but many of them seem to be a bit out of the way. I'll be leaving on GWU's campus in Foggy Bottom District, if anyone is familiar at all.
Looking forward to some advice!

Alexis: There is the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family at 4250 Harewood Road NE in Washington - http://www.ucns-holyfamily.org/index.html phone 202 526-3737. It is located next to the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center at 3900 Harewood Road and just a few short blocks up the hill from the magnificent Roman Catholic National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at 400 Michigan Avenue. Holy Transfiguration Melkite Church in McLean, Virginia is out of the way, but it is MORE than worth the effort to get there. Maybe you'll meet someone who will loan you a car for a Sunday liturgy. Or rent a car for a weekend, and use it to see all the wonderful stuff in the area that you can't get to on public transportation.

Do go to Holy Transfiguration - the difference is worth the drive!

The Monastery of the Holy Cross on Quincy St. NE has Divine Liturgy on Sunday, I think at 9:30 AM.
The Brookland Metro Station is not far from the Ukrainian Shrine of the Holy Family and the Holy Cross Monastery, although they are in opposite directions from the station.
Also, the Monastery operates the Icon and Book Service store on Quincy Street, but they are open Tuesday through Saturday only.

Pavloosh I remember there was a lengthy discussion in another thread about establishing one Eastern Catholic Seminary, but I don't rememebr this seminary being mentioned. Is it still functioning or do Americans send their Ukrainian-Catholic seminarians to Holy Ghost in Ottawa? Also is it on the subway line and worth visiting?

I'll be living on GWU's campus in Foggy Bottom District, if anyone is familiar at all. I remember there is a bus that goes from GWU to Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown and then onto Cathedral. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral St. Sophia is near the "American Cathedral" and thus on that route. Also the Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Both are worth visiting. I'll have to look for the bus number and addresses. I think these 2 are the closest Orthodox churches. Will you have a car or be using public transportation? I aks because there is a very active Ukrainian Orthodox parish but it is in the subburbs.

From the website, St. Nicholas in DC is "the primatial Cathedral of His Beatitude HERMAN, Archbishop of Washington and New York, Metropolitan of All America and Canada of the Orthodox Church in America." One colleague attends that church & I believe they have a wonderful festival once or twice a year. It is near St Sophia's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, which also has a vibrant community. Many of the above communities, I'm told, have annual festivals widely attended by DC residents. Wow, thanks for all the great information, y'all.
Because I was advised not to take a car up there (for lack of parking, etc.) I won't keep my car up there; my dad's driving it back down to Georgia for me after I get settled in. That's why I was looking for centrally located churches or at least churches that aren't terribly far off the metro lines.
I would love to get to McLean, but I don't know how feasible that is.

Alexis I trust you realise that we will be expecting to hear of your Liturgical experiences after your 6 week stay on Washington DC . I'll admit I'm not at all sure that you are going to manage to visit all the Churches - but - do your best  and enjoy the eperiences
