For anyone interested in a vast selection of Orthodox books and other goods from vendors, I recommend going to the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington D.C. this week (July 13-17) where the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is convening its 39th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress

I have been to these congresses, twice with my husband who was a delegate, and once because it was in NYC and I just wanted to check out the book vendors. I believe that the exhibition room with the vendors is usually open to the public. They usually have a good variety of CD's (EIKONA's rendition of all the services in English is very good), books, icons and the like. Ofcourse, call the hotel to confirm that you are allowed to go, and also for what times the book vendors are open...and don't be surprised that it may be the largest concentration of 'men in black' that you have ever seen roaming a hotel! wink

Wouldn't it have been awesome of they could have somehow got permission to do a procession through a few streets in DC carrying some of the icons and banners. WOW!

I wonder if it would have made the news. Can always dream can't I.
Have to admit, people would stop, look, and scratch their heads trying to figure that one out. biggrin

Pani,

In an ideal world, but you are speaking of jaded DC. Substitute
"Greek Orthodox" for anything and see if you find it interesting. Demonstrations hardly get a line or two in their media. A press conference is more their MO than a procession.

For all that may be interested. The exhibit hall and ministry pavilion is open from 10-5PM each day and no registrations are required to be in those areas. For all the other events workshops and meetings, you do have to be registered to be in those events.

As for books, the there only about a half dozen vendors, but with a plethora of books. The remaining 75+ vendors would have anything from ecclesiastical vestments, clothing, altar items, icons etc.

What is new this year is the ministry pavilion showcasing the various departments and ministries of the archdiocese. If you are in the area, stop by the pavilion and introduce yourself at the Marriage and Family section.

I had a preview on Saturday while the vendors were setting up. I will certainly return during the week. Books galore! You can stock up on enough excellent books to keep you in good reading for years. There are the usual vendors plus several from Greece with volumes not easy to find here in the U.S. Very dangerous for the bibliophile's credit cards. Park close as you will want to make several trips back to the car.

Well, I have had a chance to meet several folks that are posters here. I have met Father Elias, Deacon El, Jack Figel, David B so far. If you are in the area stop down, visit the Ministry Pavilion and say hello.
