All the Orthodox, and Catholics for that matter, celebrate the Dormition (Assumption) of the Mother of God on 15 August. The difference comes in how one determines when 15 August is. Those following the Old Calendar observe 15 August (and therefore the Feast of the Dormition) on 28 August according to the Gregorian Calendar. For the Orthodox (and Greek Catholics) observing the Julian Calendar, the Dormition Fast began on Thursday, 1 August (i.e 14 August on the New Calendar).

Dear Father David,

My poor microwave oven isn't even baptized, and you want it to start fasting?

As for me, patience, please. Despite my flow of culinary fancy, artichokes are out of season here in Ireland. In about six weeks we should be knee-deep in them.

fraternally yours in Christ,

Fr. Serge
