I am so sick of seeing these 'newsworthy' headlines on every news site I go to online, including when I sign in to my e-mail account. The reason I am even posting this ridiculous piece, is because I honestly think that these type of contests which occur so frequently in our country are sinful, not to mention grotesque, disgusting and crass. We all take food for granted to some extent, I am sure, but when one thinks of how precious our daily bread is, how fortunate we are to have it, and how many do NOT have it, both in the U.S. and even more so in other countries around the world, these contests bespeak great sin. The partaking of food has always been a celebration of sort throughout history. You prepare food and consume it with friends and family. You enjoy God's bounty, you are sustained, and you share this gift of life with love. In many countries, the careful preparation of food is associated with love. How low have we sunk, that we have contests where people stuff themselves with sickening amount of food as 'entertainment'? So much of the extremes American culture feeds us (and exports through its media) as 'entertainment' (horrible language, horrible violence, horrible crimes, horrible extremes of womenly physical attributes, horrible extremes of drinking, of immorality, or eating) is nothing more than a total debasing of humanity. Lord have mercy! Alice http://news.aol.com/article/man-eats-45-pizza-slices-in-10-minutes/208761

Alice, your words are right on the mark. I think that gluttony is one of the greatest of unrecognized sins in our culture. The ancient Church fathers saw gluttony as being just as grave as sexual sin and some even interpreted the fall in terms of gluttony (the gluttonous eating of the fruit).

Can you imagine the good they would be doing if they made this food for charity? And to think that food banks in my state are nearly empty. Very sad.

Slava Isusu Christu! (Glory to God!) Slava na Viki! (Glory Forever!)
What perfect timing, Alice. In my hands is an invitation to an event marking the 75th Anniversary of the Genocide in Ukraine (Holodomor) which is coming up on Sunday, November 9th. It is being held at Penn State University. Divine Liturgy is at 1:30 and is being celebrated by the Most Reverend Stefan Soroka, Metropolitan-Archbishop of Philadelphia with responses sung by "Prometheus" Ukrainian Male Choir of Philadelphia. Then at 3pm is the program, featuring guest speaker Alexander J. Motyl, Professor of Politcal Science at Rutgers University and Alex and Helen Woskob, who will be discussing their experience during the Genocide in Ukraine.
It's being sponsored by the Penn State Ukrainian Society and the Penn State Byzantine Catholic Student Ministry. I can't wait to go.
People are eating pizza and hot dogs, only to have to throw it back up their stomachs are so full, when something like this happened! For Joseph Stalin to do what he did, knowingly and with the intention of killing people. He was a bigger monster than Hitler, in my opinion.
God willing, I will be able to attend and can't wait to hear the Liturgy (can I be hopeful and say at least some will be in Church Slavonic?) and the discussion. This is something more people need to know about in schools.
Tim

TIM:
Would you be kind enough to send me a reminder closer to the event? I'd really like to be there.

Tim Tim, I hope you get to go. For those interested Tim, would you please post the location on campus this is going to be taking place at?
