You will certainly get no argument from me about spending and Bush. It would be interesting to see what the government spent on the military in each administration. Certainly it had to pick up under Reagan after Jimmy Carter irresponsibly weakened the country.

The Constitution relegates to the Federal government the responsibility to provide for a national defense. That is one of its essential roles. Welfare, Social Security, Education, etc etc fall way outside of its charter. IMHO, decisions and funding for these things are proper to the States. I personally tend to be a Conservative when it comes to the Federal Branch and a Progressive on certain social safety net issues when it comes to the States. It's all about subsidiarity...I fear the nationalization of so many industries, which will simply cause your debt figures to go even further through the roof!

Eisenhower seems quite prophetic in his estimation that any nation with an industrial military complex entrenched into the national economy cannot help but increase spending and the national debt.
