Moscow, October 24, Interfax - The human rights center of the World Russian People's Council has urged Ukrainian authorities to stop persecuting Archpriest Dimitry Sidor, a leader of the Rusyn national movement, who was earlier charged with separatism.
"The Soim [people's parliament] of Carpathian Rusyns led by Archpriest Dimitry Sidor does not pursue the goal of breaking Ukraine's territorial integrity. It only calls to observe the rights of Rusyns and their recognition as an independent nation that has the right to autonomy as part of the Ukrainian state," the human rights center said in a statement obtained by Interfax-Religion on Friday.
"Courts of [Ukraine's] Zakarpattia region reject claims of the Soim, which tries to protest against the opening of a criminal case against its leader. Attempts to study materials of the case are futile as well," the statement reads.
"Rusyns are still threatened with violence, and their ethnical dignity is being constantly humiliated," it reads.
"It is not Rusyns, but dissenters who are still unpunished for seizing Orthodox temples and radical politicians who are constantly insulting Russians and people having pro-Russian sentiments, who pose the greatest threat to Ukraine's territorial integrity," the human rights center said.
The center called on all Russian and foreign human rights organizations to "pay the utmost attention to instances of violating the rights of Rusyns and tell Ukrainian authorities that such actions are unacceptable."

Here is a bit of background about Sydor. He is a revisionist in the sense that he is not really a true Rusyn. He believes in "Mother Russia" and does not accept Ukrainians as a distinct ethnic group just a part of Russia. Same with Belarus. Fr Dimitry Sidor, is Carpatho-Russian, that is Rusin, and a spiritual leader of contemporary Carpatho-Russia. Born in 1955, he studied Physics at the University of the Rusin Capital Uzhgorod, at present in the Ukrainian ‘Transcarpathian Region’. After this he studied at the Moscow Theological Academy. Since 1990 he has been the rector of the Orthodox Cathedral in the Rusin capital of Uzhgorod and is also the architect of the new Cathedral there.
He chairs the Sts Cyril and Methodius Society, runs the main Rusin Orthodox website, as well as taking a very active role in Rusin media and political life and translating the Gospels into Rusin. He is a keen advocate of Slav Orthodox unity, especially of what we would call the ‘four Russias’: Great Russia, Little Russia (at present called the ‘Ukraine’), White Russia (Belarus) and Carpatho-Russia, under the leadership of the Patriarch of All Rus, His Holiness Alexis II.

Dear Miller,
It would be interesting to learn about authentic Rusyn nationalism that is not simply a form of the Four Russias theory, a subsidiary of Great Russian chauvinism.
Is Rusyn nationalism an active political force in Eastern Europe today? How is it organized? What are its political goals for the Rusyn people?
And also how does the Byzantine Catholic Church relate to Rusyn identity? Can one be a Rusyn culturally and have this cultural identity be nourished within the ecclesial context of the BCC in the US today?

Those are all good questions. I have one more question: where does ACROD in the USA fit into all this?
I though Robert Magocsi was the elected president of the Rusyn World Congress. They must have a web site.
