My wife's grandmother phoned today she heard this on the Ukrainian language radio program. I was glad to find it on the web to confirm the good news. UOC-MP Orthodox Synod Calls Holodomor of 1932-1933 Genocide 12.11.2008, [21:50] // UOC-MP // Kyiv—The Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate passed a decree to mark the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor (forced famine) in Ukraine during its session on 11 November, 2008. According to the Synod’s resolution (journal 87), on 22-23 November, all the eparchies of UOC will conduct events to remember the victims of Holodomor. According to the site of UOC, the Synod also passed an address on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine. The address stresses that the “artificial famine of 1932-1933 was planned by the Bolsheviks to accelerate forced collectivization, liquidate the class of well-to-do peasants “kurkuls” and destroy “hostile elements.” The synod’s address calls the Holodomor a genocide, which was meant to “destroy the very soul of the nation, bring it to full spiritual slavery.” • http://orthodox.org.ua/uk/publikatsii/2008/11/11/3773.html For those who read Ukrainian:

I checked Metropolitan Volodymyr's excellent web-site, and the letter is there, right enough. But I noticed that it appears only in Ukrainian - and that President Medvedev of Russia has not hesitated to express his dissatisfaction that the Ukrainian government is officially observing the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor.
In the midst of the famine, food for thought.

There is a time lapse in posting the translations. Here is the English version at last: Address of the Holy Synod of the UOC
In the 20th century the Ukrainian nation had survived through one of the most awful tragedies in its history - Holodomor. Ukraine, which had always provided the bread to the whole world, had experienced mass famine. The famine brought about a considerable number of victims and brought much desolation. It had both subjective and objective origins and consequences. The artificial famine of 1932-1933 was planned by the Bolsheviks in order to accelerate the forceful collectivization, to liquidate the kulaks (better-off peasants) as a social class, to annihilate the "hostile elements". But still there is a factor, uniting this social cataclysm and the rest of the repressive actions of the totalitarian Soviet rule. It is a radical change of worldview - disavowing Theantropos Christ and Christian morals while choosing the new faith - the faith of Man-God, the Antichrist. The adepts of this religion wished to build paradise on the earth, to achieve the radiant future for the humanity - but the future without God. Their light was in fact the darkness. Their worldview was based on the principles of the eternal darkness, since it is only God who is the source of light. Their ideology brought about evil instead of good, since it is only God who is the Creator of all good. Where the paradise without God is built - there the hell appears. Instead of the promised paradise life the nation, tangled by the Soviet ideology, underwent infernal sufferings.
The history of our Motherland had known much hard time. Natural disasters, wars, social-political controversies and other troubles resulted in various crisis phenomena, among which there were "extinction, hunger and sword" (Isaiah 51: 19).
But in the 1930-ties it was for the first time that Ukraine experienced artificial famine, mass cynical, purposeful and cruel murder of millions of her citizens. Such genocide might have taken place only in a God-hating and man-hating environment. Millions of people died in terrible agony on the rich Ukrainian black earth. This Famine was an attempt to exterminate the very soul of the nation, to carry it to complete spiritual slavery. It became an instrument of diabolic revenge for the impossibility to eradicate the filial memory of God, the Love of God, faithfulness to God and faith in God from the conscience of our wise people, instinct with high virtue. This faith could be destroyed only through the physical annihilation of its carrier. Therefore the God-fighting power, having created the spiritual hunger, foredoomed the nation to physical starvation.
The people were taken away the bread the same way as the daily bread had been taken away beforehand. The fruitful crop field gave enough bread to conscientious toilers. But all the bread sprinkled with the sweat of the peasantry was eliminated. Every last grain that could support life was withdrawn. Those who collected spikes were shot. The agony of hunger was really infernal. They hardly managed to bury the dead. Many were buried alive in the communal tombs. The children suffered worst of all. Moloch of bolshevism devoured these innocent victims with devilish heartlessness.
Ukraine had lost millions of its children that time. All of them had suffered severe pains and awful death. Those who survived had forever remembered what the paradise on the earth without God was like.
75 years have passed since. The time heals the wounds of soul, but the wound in the soul of Ukraine cannot be healed. It will always remind by insatiable pain of the times when the devil dominated Ukraine and other nations of the Soviet communion. It is with a deep sorrow that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church prayerfully recalls the victims of Holodomor and other repressions of the Soviet totalitarian rule. The number of victims totals ten million people - all those shot, murdered in prisons, tortured by various moral and physical tortures, deceased because of the pains of hunger. There was no such number of victims even in the war times. Indeed, the power led a bloodshed war with its own people.
The Church severely condemns the factors that caused this tragedy. There is no justification for that. The history has passed its own sentence. No repressions could save the state political system based on sin and God-fighting, neglecting the fundamental moral principles of humanity - love, faith and hope. "Woe to them that devise iniquity "(Micah 2: 1). "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes" (Psalms 101: 3). " Whose end is destruction " (Philippians 3: 19).
The Church warns against such defective and inhuman ideology that caused such a tragedy and calls to penance all those who has not yet understood and haven't disavowed theomachy in all its forms.
The Church calls to rejecting the extremism, intolerance, revenge, hate of one's neighbour, self-non-self discrimination self-non-self discrimination. God has no strangers. The time of the spiritual reunion of the Ukrainian nation, of return to the basic moral values has arrived. The history has manifested what the result of the renouncement of the Christian principles was. Only the holy faith, the firm hope and overwhelming love will help to build the worthy future and prevent the errors of the past.
The Church discloses the truth of the eternal life of those who had been martyrised during the Holodomor. As loving Mother, the Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church prays for their repose in the abodes of the righteous and announces their eternal memory.
Their souls will dwell amid good things. Their memory is from generation to generation.

Let's home this get through to those in Russia.

Dear Friends,
It is indeed very good that Met. Vladimir and his Synod has set this out.
Even if it were true that it was a political move so as not to lose any more ground in Ukraine, this was a good move.
Individual parishes of the UOC-MP have, of late, been demonstrating a strong "autonomous" attitude that has been upsetting to some, such as inscribing "Blazhenishey Otets" or "His Beatitude/Father" on church items without referencing at the same time the Patriarch of Moscow.
If the "test" of Orthodoxy in Ukraine is the level of its Ukrainian spirit, Metropolitan Vladimir has passed it with flying (blue and yellow) colours.
We must also remember that the majority of the bishops of the uncanonical UOC-KP and UAOC in Ukraine were, at one time or another, students of Metropolitan Vladimir - who is widely respected by one and all, including the UGCC.
Perhaps the time will come when world-wide Orthodoxy will accept that Kyiv is to be its own Orthodox Patriarchate. When that day comes, Metropolitan Vladimir would make an eminent one.

Although the UOC-MP comments represent a radical change with the past, the UOC-KP has issued a much more accurate pastoral letter. Kyivan Patriarchate Addresses Faithful on Holodomor 18.11.2008, [21:53] // UOC-KP // Kyiv—On occasion of the marking of the 75th anniversary of the genocide Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate, Patriarch Filaret addressed the faithful. The address, which was passed on 15 November by the Synod of UOC-KP, stressed that “our duty is not only to remember those killed by the famine and destroyed for the freedom of Ukraine – we must become worthy of our ancestors and pass a better country to our descendants through our sacrificial love for the Motherland.” The head of UOC-KP noted that “the more truth has been revealed about that crime, the stronger the opposition has been to the truth by the forces, which, probably, feel their internal affinity with the organizers of the Holodomor.” Patriarch Filaret stressed that these forces refuse to admit that “in the mind of Stalin and his milieu, collectivization was conceived and realized not only as a punitive action against the freedom-loving peasantry, but also as a way of “solving the national question.” So reported Ukrainian Orthodoxy web site. In view of the above, the head of UOC-KP stressed that despite the fact that “all the peoples of USSR to one extent or another suffered from the totalitarian policy in general and from collectivization, in particular, –documented directives of the soviet government, which prove that collectivization was combined with the “solving of the national question” exist only with respect to Ukraine. “Only regions, populated predominantly by Ukrainians, were surrounded by military detachments to prevent people from saving themselves by escape. Only in these regions, activists of the Soviet power confiscated all the food and destroyed on the spot what they were not able to confiscate. It was in Ukraine that in 1929-1930, before the Holodomor, the policy of national revival was cruelly wound up, a series of punitive measures were taken to destroy or imprison the Ukrainian national intelligentsia, including the trial of the Association of Liberation of Ukraine and destruction of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church,” says the address. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/17/Holodomor_Famine_map.jpgPatriarch Filaret stressed the importance of the fact that “the Holodomor is recognized by us as a genocide of the Ukrainian nation, which is composed of people living in Ukraine and considering it their motherland regardless of their ethnic origin.” He expressed his conviction that “both then and now, not the line in the documents, but love for the native Ukrainian land defined and define belonging to the Ukrainian nation.” “Therefore, we reject accusations of attempts to stir up national hatred through the remembrance events, which are accusations are made against Ukraine,” noted the address. “The duty of each patriot is to promote the spread of this truth, no matter how strongly the people, who seek to hide the evil in the darkness, [may] resist. Let a candle, which is both the flame of grief and light of hope, be lit in the window of each home of people, who love Ukraine,” asked the head of UOC-KP

Thanks to both Metropolitan Vladimir and His Holiness +Filaret for their words and actions...this is quite a change from the historical position of the UOC-MP - as I recall the MP Sobor had cautioned Metropolitan Vladimir on mentioning it.

Bad news: the UOC-MP has retracted their words. UOC-MP Orthodox Head’s Secretary Comments on Definition of Holodomor as Genocide 20.11.2008, [11:48] // UOC-MP // Kyiv—The Secretary of the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate, Vicar of the Kyivan Metropolitanate, Bishop Oleksandr (Drabynko) commented on the address of the Synod of UOC on the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine. Regarding the definition of the Holodomor as a “genocide” in the text of the address, Bishop Oleksandr noted that “it was not meant that it was exactly genocide.” “We tried to avoid this word at all,” stated the secretary of the head of UOC. According to the vicar, “genocide is a crime of one nation against another one.” “We do not raise the question in this way by any means. Initially, the Synod’s goal was not to recognize the Holodomor exactly as a genocide,” he stressed in an interview for www.zn.ua. [ zn.ua.] This is why Ukraine needs an autocephalous church.

Sorry, I can't find anything in that edition of the newspaper about the UOC-MP & the Holodomor, but there is this article: # 45 (674) 24 — 30 November 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mykola Kulish Literary “Carnage” November 24: Commemorating Victims of Famines and Political Reprisals in Ukraine Author: Sergey MAKHUN print version discuss e-mail a friend read later write to the editor On December 14, 1932, when the Holodomor was getting into full swing, Joseph Stalin and Vyacheslav Molotov issued a resolution on “improving the national policy in Ukraine and the areas of compact residence of Ukrainians beyond the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (the Kuban, Stavropol, Voronezh, and Kursk provinces).” It was a final sentence. At the dawn of the Communist era Vladimir Lenin launched a policy of “ukrainization,” which was supposed to “integrate Ukraine and other provinces into the Bolshevik state.” In September 1926, the GPU [Rus. Glavnoye Politicheskoye Upravleniye – Main Political Department – precursor of the NKVD and the KGB – A.B.] issued a classified document titled “On Ukrainian Separatism.” Here is just one excerpt: “The fact that Ukrainian nationalists have stopped the open struggle against the Soviet power and recognized it formally does not mean that they have completely reconciled themselves to the present state of affairs and given up on their hostile schemes… The so-called ‘cultural struggle’ has become tremendously popular, involving the overwhelming majority of prominent activists of Ukrainian counterrevolution.” That was the green light to the secret campaign against “Ukrainian bourgeois nationalism.” The open anti-nationalist campaign began in 1929, when the GPU “exposed” what it labeled as “the Association for Liberation of Ukraine.” The ALU case was heard on March 9 – April 19, 1930 at the Kharkiv Opera Theater in the presence of the defense, witnesses, and a selected crowd scene. There were 45 defendants, including two academicians and fifteen professors. After the horrible famine in 1932 and 1933, the Stalin regime no longer bothered to stage such demonstrative trials. M. Khatayevych, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine CCCPU, said in 1933: “There is a fierce fight between the peasants and the Soviet power. It is a mortal combat. This year has tested our strength and their patience. The famine has shown them who is in charge. It has cost millions of lives, but the kolkhoz system will exist forever. We have won this war!” Having done away with the “kulaks,” Stalin took on the Ukrainian intelligentsia. This time “the sword of Bolshevik justice” prosecuted “the dregs of nationalist organizations” who “schemed out terrorist acts.” One of the most notable criminal cases involved three writers accused of ties with the so-called “Ukrainian Military Organization”. In a closed-door trial that took place in Kharkiv on March 3, 1934, Oleg Dosvitniy, Serhiy Pylypenko, and Ostap Vyshnya were found guilty of plotting to assassinate Pavel Postyshev (CCCPU Second Secretary), Vlas Chubar (Chairman of the Sovnarkom [Council of People’s Commissaries – A.B.], and Vsevolod Balitsky (People’s Commissary of Internal Affairs). Ostap Vyshnya was the only one who was “pardoned” – he got ten years in the GULAG. Dosvitniy, Pylypenko, and seven other “enemies of the people” were executed. Charges of involvement in the UMO were brought against 148 people. Les Kurbas [famous writer and stage director, founder of the modern theatrical school in Ukraine – A.B.] was arrested in November 1933 and executed on November 3, 1937 by Capt. Mikhail Matveev. Between October 27 and November 10, 1937 Matveev killed 1,111 people. As he reported, he executed them “quickly and accurately.” 1933 saw another wave of reprisals against Ukrainian scientists and teachers. Some of them chose a desperate escape: writer Mykola Khvylyoviy took his life on May 13 and People’s Commissary of Education Mykola Skrypnyk shot himself on July 7. On September 5 Skrypnyk’s successor Oleksandr Shumsky was sentenced to ten years of penal servitude. NKVD agents killed him in 1946. On December 1, 1934, the day when Sergey Kirov was assassinated, Stalin signed the resolution passed by the USSR Central Executive Committee “On Introducing Amendments to Active Criminal Procedural Codes of the USSR Republics.” The following excerpt from the inquisitional document that untied the hands of Stalin’s satraps is quite eloquent. “Introduce the following amendments to the active criminal procedural codes of the USSR republics on investigation of cases of terrorist organizations and terrorist acts against Soviet officials: 1. Investigations of these cases shall be completed within ten days. 2. Bills of indictment shall be delivered to defendants 24 hours prior to hearings in court. 3. Cases shall be heard without participation of the litigants. 4. Sentences shall not be challenged; petitions for pardon shall not be allowed. 5. Death sentences shall be executed immediately.” Stalin used the assassination of Sergey Kirov as a pretext for eradicating the opposition – real, potential, and fictitious – in Ukraine and the rest of the USSR. The NKVD reacted promptly. On December 5 it filed a criminal case, charging 17 prominent writers, journalists, and cultural workers with involvement in a counterrevolutionary organization and plotting terrorist acts. During searches in their apartments “letters, diaries, and literature of nationalist bias were found and confiscated.” Investigators put heavy pressure on the accused. Having no direct evidence, they forced the innocent people to perjure themselves and testify against their colleagues and friends. The following passage in the bill of indictment left no chance for acquittal: “This counterrevolutionary party, pretending to cooperate with the Communist Party of Ukraine, was preparing a coup d’etat. It became a center of attraction for chauvinist and anti-Soviet elements that used this party as a convenient legal disguise; this nationalist policy would have led to an inevitable armed rebellion.” Investigators also used affidavits signed by people who had been convicted on other charges. Oles Dosvitniy testified on December 29, 1933: “Having met here in Kharkiv with such mature ideologists of Ukrainian nationalism as Yaloviy, Khvylyoviy, and other nationalists of smaller caliber, I found a medium consonant with my ideology. I joined them and soon afterwards became a member of a counterrevolutionary organization which was devising an armed struggle against Bolshevism.” When this affidavit was shown to the arrested “counterrevolutionaries,” Dosvitniy had been executed. One of the litigants – Levko Kovaliv – refused to cooperate. He refused to read and sign his bill of indictment. Several defendants (Pidmohylniy, Kulish, Polishchuk, Popov) did not perjure their friends. Others gave in. Grygoriy Epik cooperated with the investigators from the very first interrogation. “…Kulish told me that the political principle of our organization was Ukrainian fascism.” Epik was the only one whose case was closed down. It was Epik who suggested the “terrorism” component of the case by admitting that the organization aimed at “fighting the Soviet power and the Communist Party by all means up to individual terror against party and government officials.” Mykola Kulish stood his ground staunchly during three interrogations, though he was “exposed in testimonies given by Krushelnytsky, Epik, and Yaloviy, which he called ‘false.’” However, after the next interrogation he pleaded guilty. So did Pidmohylniy, who held out even longer and denied all charges but wrote in a statement dated January 10, 1935,“Having thought over my last interrogation of January 9, I decided to give not false or evasive but true testimonies…” In his affidavit Pidmohyniy corrected the date from January 11 to January 10 (which suggests that the butchers did not gain their ends at once). One of the witnesses quoted Valerian Polishchuk’s article published in a literary magazine. “Such writers as Franko, Ukrainka, Vinnychenko, Kotsyubynsky, Kobulyanska, Stefanyk, Oles, and Filyansky are the best writers of world literature…Their works are full of original Ukrainian national characters and artistic techniques.” The witness holds Polishchuk up to shame: “Who does V. Polishchuk praise? He praises all those saboteurs and nationalists – from Zerov and Yefremov to the exposed counterrevolutionaries.” The bill of indictment was passed on February 20, 1935 and signed by Balitsky himself. On March 28, the USSR High Court announced its verdict. “The central body of the Ukrainian counterrevolutionary organization” was found guilty of “masterminding terrorist acts against Kosior and Postyshev as well as against Comrade Stalin.” L. Kovaliv pleaded innocent. V. Pidmohylniy and A. Panov pleaded guilty partially. Fifteen of seventeen defendants were sentenced to 10 years with confiscation of property; D. Kudrya and S. Semko-Kozachuk were sentenced to seven years. In November 1937, eight convicts were executed in the Sandarmokha camp, and one died of TB in Solovki on February 2, 1936. On August 4, 1956, the USSR High Court Military Panel of Judges acquitted them as “convicted groundlessly on fabricated charges.” Why did the NKVD play up the “terrorist trace” in all those fabricated criminal cases? One of the explanations can be traced back to October 9, 1934 when Croatian nationalists assassinated King of Yugoslavia Alexander I Karageorgijevic and French Foreign Minister Louis Barthou in Marseilles. Barthou was one of the architects of the Versailles system and an irreconcilable enemy of Nazism. Hitler, obsessed by revenge ideas, used those murders as a pretext for the onslaught of Nazism. In this context, the mention of the Marseilles case in the charges brought against the Ukrainian writers was not accidental. In his final testimony dated January 15, 1935 Pidmohylniy wrote (obviously from the investigator’s dictation): “In connection with the Marseilles events, I had conversations with each interlocutor about terror as a method of struggle. In those conversations I stated that terror was a lawful method of struggle.” The “Marseilles events” were mentioned many times in the materials of that criminal case. In the early 1930s, waves of terror swept across Europe. In the USSR terror became a state policy. IRA terrorists killed English officials; Ukrainian rebels committed their “attentates” in response to the “pacification” and humiliations of Ukrainians in Poland; Croats fought against Serbian hegemony in Yugoslavia… The Stalin regime did not have to look for pretexts for cracking down on the “dregs of anti-Soviet elements” and staging sequels of the “terrorism drama.” Stalin’s satraps succeeded in quenching Ukrainian literature by jumping down the throat of “those scribblers.” The memory of the people who perished in appalling physical and mental sufferings in the 20th century can now help this nation to recover. Such terms as “Ukrainian nationalism,” “Nazi accomplices,” and “anti-Semitism” (with reference to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army) are still mentioned in historical and political debates. At the same time, certain Ukraine-phobic forces feel at liberty and enjoy support from the mass media, which they control, and even at the top state level. The author appreciates the assistance of the SBU Archive staff in preparing this material. http://www.mw.ua/3000/3150/61199/ Have to check the Russian Edition but my Russian is limited.

An hour long documentary called "Harvest of Despair" It was almost sickening to watch this example of mans inhumanity to man. Eternal memory to the millions who died at the hands of a madman. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3897393411603039499

The Ecumenical Patriarch has correctly mentioned the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian peoples.

The Russian Patriarch has decided to support the Russian president's pathological lies. Once again both individuals are active participants in the global conspiracy to conceal the Ukrainian genocide of 1932 - 1933 by now claiming that "everyone in the USSR suffered equally" - which of course is not true. Although there was some food shortages in Russia, there was no famine. Famine death rates were near zero in Russia whereas in Ukraine and the ethnographic Ukrainian lands of Russia (ex; Kuban) they were on average 25% and in some areas approached 50%.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Holodomor_Famine_map.jpg#file
The Russian Patriarch should ask his president to open the Russian state archives which will prove the the Holodomor was an act of genocide towards the Ukrainian peoples on orders from Moscow.
I.F.

Ukraine President Thanks UOC-MP Orthodox Head for Holodomor Address 22.11.2008, [22:04] // Church-state relations //
Kyiv—In his letter to the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko thanked Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan) for the address of the Synod of the UOC-MP on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor (forced famine) tragedy. orthodox.org.ua posted the news on 20 November 2008. As RISU reported earlier, the address calls the Holodomor genocide: “That genocide was an attempt to destroy the very soul of the nation, to lead it to complete spiritual slavery.”
Yushchenko requested that the head of UOC-MP “say prayers for the souls of the innocently killed.” “Let your wisdom and selfless service to the Ukrainian nation continue to promote the strengthening of its spirituality and establishment of high Christian values,” reads Yushchenko’s letter in conclusion.

Thanks. Nice to see the UOC-MP involved in finally calling the Holodomor a genicide. This was in the Winnipeg Free Press: Winnipeg Free Press Editorials Famine was genocide
Updated: November 22, 2008 at 08:10 AM CST BASED on the numbers alone, body for body, victim for victim, murder for murder, the Ukrainian Famine of 1932-1933 may be the single greatest crime against humanity that has ever been committed.
No one will ever know for certain how many people were killed by the deliberate starvation of Ukraine ordered by Stalin in the 1930s, but estimates run as high as 20 million, which was the figure used by the scholar Robert Conquest, who did more than anyone to expose to the world the horrors of the Holodomor, as Ukrainians refer to the Famine.
In his book about the Famine, Koba the Dread, British author Martin Amis quotes from Mr. Conquest's Harvest of Sorrow to emphasize the magnitude of the slaughter: "We may perhaps put (the Famine) in perspective in the present case by saying that in the actions here recorded about 20 human lives were lost for, not every word, but every letter, in this book." Harvest of Sorrow is 411 pages long.
It has been said that the death of one person is a tragedy, the death of a million a statistic. And one can argue which 20th century legacy is the greater enormity, the Holocaust or the Holodomor, but while the individual horrors, the tragedies, that each accumulated can perhaps be counted, they can never be measured in any meaningful way.
They can, however, be remembered and those who refuse to remember them, or even acknowledge them, become accomplices in the original crime. The Holocaust that Nazi Germany waged against the Jews is well-documented and well-remembered. It is ingrained in the conscience and the consciousness of the world, or at least of the Western world, to the point that Holocaust denial is a crime in many countries. Deniers are regarded as accomplices. The world is a better and safer place for that memory.
It is a worse and more dangerous place, however, because of the continuing refusal of many people, many governments even, to acknowledge that the Ukrainian Famine occurred and that it was a deliberate act of genocide committed by Stalin and the Soviet government against the Ukrainian people.
Only in recent years has the Holodomor come to gain some acceptance in mainstream Western thought. Previous to that, Western intellectuals, leftists, writers, journalists and general public opinion subscribed to the Soviet propaganda that it was a natural famine of far smaller proportions.
So confused have these lies left the world that estimates of the victims of this genocide range from an absurdly low 2.5 million to Mr. Conquest's credible 20 million and far beyond, with the most accepted figure being a compromise of a still staggering 10 million victims.
There is, and never was, any rational reason for accepting the Stalin line on the Ukrainian Famine, yet the West eagerly bought into it, and many people still do. The time has past, however, when honest denial of the Holodomor is possible, just as honest denial of the Holocaust is no longer possible. The Famine, too, should be engrained in our conscience and our consciousness lest we remain its accomplices. And this a wrap up of commemoration events in Canada: Canadians mark 75th anniversary of famine genocide with National Holodomor Awareness Week November 16 - 23, 2008 People were dying everywhere, even on our doorstep. If anyone was caught picking leftover grain, even if they were children, they were shot. -- Natalia Talanchuk, Edmonton Survivors of the Holodomor are sharing their horrific experiences with Canadians as the international community prepares to mark the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor Famine-Genocide in Ukraine of 1932-33. Holodomor one of the most heinous crimes in the history of mankind, was the result of a deliberate political strategy masterminded by Stalin and his totalitarian communist regime. In 2006, Ukraine acknowledged its history by officially recognizing the Holodomor as genocide. In 2008, Canada followed suit taking the lead among western nations. As a result, survivors, who for so many years shared the truth with no one - fearing reprisals, now speak freely of the terror which reigned in Ukraine in the thirties. National Holodomor Awareness Week will annually unite all Canadians in remembering the victims and raising awareness of this tragedy. On November 22, International Holodomor Memorial Day, Canadians will pause for a moment of reflection at 9:00 a.m. and light a candle of remembrance in their homes. On November 23, memorial services will be held in all Ukrainian churches throughout the country and church bells will toll 10 times symbolizing the 10 million victims. Massive famine solemnly marked weeklong series of emotional events ^ [...] The tribute launched a weeklong series of events that wraps up next Saturday with a service at the Holodomor Monument at Winnipeg City Hall. History records that Ukraine's nationalistic spirit made the country a political target. Stalin's regime retaliated by imposing soaring grain quotas to starve the population. [...] That daughter's eyes watered in sympathy Sunday as she listened to her mother recount one of her harshest memories in detail. "She saw with her own eyes in the city's train station: There were bodies laid out on benches and floors. These were people who were lying in the train station, not moving. The Russian police would gather the bodies up and take them away," daughter Lilia Sorokowska said, translating her mother's Ukrainian. "They were starving to death in front of her, as they waited for trains to board to go to Moscow to get bread," the daughter continued. People were trying to catch trains because there was bread in Moscow. The strongest made it, the mother said. The weak watched the trains go and died, to be carried away later by police. "That is what I saw with my own eyes," the elderly woman then said in English. Complete article: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/world/story/4250611p-4894230c.html

Here is the English Translation of the Ecumenical Patriarch's address for the 75th Aniversary Commemoration of the Holodomor: Address of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine to the Entire Pious Ukrainian NationBeloved children of the Church, dear Ukrainians! By God's Providence, we have another occasion for a paternal address to you. The Mother Church, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, hereby again addresses you to share with you not only joy, but also the grief caused by the Holodomor. The few sons and daughters of the Ukrainian nation whom the Lord helped to survive at the time of the Ukrainian tragedy, the Holodomor of 1932-1933, increasingly often are leaving forever their homes, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Therefore, our address is first of all to young people representing the future of the Ukrainian state. Together with you, we seek to comprehend not only the number of Ukrainians killed by the famine, but, above all, the causes which led to the tragedy. Let us leave the study of the political and social causes to secular scholars. We will try to look at the Holodomor from the Church's viewpoint. Why did Ukraine, which from ancient times supplied bread to countries which lacked it, begin at a peaceful time to starve more severely than any European nation did in times of war? The power of the newly-established state on the territory of the collapsed empire replaced the star of Bethlehem with one of human blood, and in place of Christ's purple, which absorbed the holy blood of the Savior of the world and which has been its holy banner, leading to eternal life and always followed by believing people, the red flag began flying, which made the innocent blood of the best sons and daughters of your nation invisible. As soon as an oppressor comes to power, he does not care about the good of the governed native nation or respect its spiritual, cultural and material values. He knows well that sooner or later the people will begin to see and get rid of the yoke. Therefore, to ensure a long rule, it is necessary to terrorize the titular nation. The preserved historic documents of the Soviet Union are rich in information about the nationality of the repressed. The overwhelming majority of the destroyed, imprisoned or exiled people were Ukrainians who were nationally conscious or good managers. The inspirers, organizers, managers and chief executors of the extermination of the Ukrainians were people who can be described with the words of Jesus Christ: "You belong to your father, the devil...He was a murderer from the beginning..." (Jn. 8:44) Three holodomors, repressions, and war should have become for you, the Ukrainian nation, a stimulus to spiritual purification, moral improvement, return to your forefathers' Christian tradition with its own Church and internal Christian spirituality and not an imported external, formal Christianity verging on the worship of ritual. And our visit to Kyiv for the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine showed us the real sons and daughters of the Ukrainian Church, who pray to God and not to man, even if he holds a high post. We saw that even the terrors of the 20th century did not break the backbone of the nation, did not make the Ukrainian a slave and obedient executer of other people's intentions. We call all to turn their faces to Kyiv, to Ukrainian spiritual shrines, religious and cultural, to the Ukrainian nation: all people born in Ukraine have one and the same mother, Ukraine, which should be served by everyone, without exception, both those vested with power and "small" citizens. Remember the Savior's words: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand." (Matt. 12:25) Dear Ukrainians! Your past, whether joyful and victorious or sad and tragic, especially the Holodomor, will always remain with you, even when you try to forget, diminish or distort it to please your neighbors. The following words of the Apostle Paul apply to you: "Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to." (1st Cor. 7:24) Your calling is to be good Christians within the ancient Ukrainian Church tradition and citizens of Ukraine, as well as to witness unanimously to the tragedies of the Ukrainian nation in the 20th century, especially the Great Holodomor of 1932-1933, to the world. It is your duty to the memory of your great grandparents, grandparents and parents, for there was no tragedy in human history when more representatives of a single nation were destroyed in one peaceful year than during the several years of a war. And no matter what anyone says or if they try to belittle the evil, this is the clear sign of genocide. Children of Christ's Church, dear Ukrainians! In the days of remembrance of the victims of the Great Holodomor of 1932-1933, especially on its 75th anniversary, your Mother-Church, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, grieves together with you and expresses its deep and sincere sympathies to all of you and Ukraine's President, Viktor Yushchenko, who represents Ukraine before the world and through whose persistent efforts the world learns increasingly more information about the terrible tragedy of Ukrainians in the 20th century. We bring our prayers to our Lord Jesus Christ and ask the Most Gracious Savior to give rest in holy dwellings to the souls of all those killed by the Famine and admit them to the assembly of His Martyrs as those innocently killed. May their memory live forever and may the heavenly blessing of the Most High be on you who are alive! At the Fanar, 20 November 2008 Bartholomew Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch http://www.president.gov.ua/en/content/adr_bart_75.html

Here is what happened in saskatoon Saskatchewan: http://www.canada.com/saskatoonstar...?id=1c2ecdf1-286d-4af8-9377-b606749737d4Holodomor remembered: Local Ukrainians mark 75th anniversary of deadly famineLuke Simcoe, The StarPhoenix Published: Monday, November 24, 2008 When Rose Kinal was just nine years old, Soviet agents came to the small Ukrainian town where she lived and took away the life she had known. "They took everything," she said. "Land, animals, food . . . everything." Kinal, now 85, is a survivor of the Holodomor, a devastating famine perpetrated on the Ukrainian people between 1932 and 1933. Members of Saskatoon's Ukrainian community march down College Drive from the Memorial Gates to St. Thomas More College;Saturday afternoon to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the famine that killed seven to 10 million people in the Ukraine in 1932-33 Under the direction of Josef Stalin, the Soviet regime imposed excessive grain quotas on the Ukraine, a region regarded as the agricultural heartland of the former Soviet Union. Staunchly nationalist, many Ukrainians resisted collective farming. Those that did were blacklisted -- their towns and villages were cordoned off by soldiers and their food supplies confiscated. Kinal remembers soldiers tapping on walls and floors to make sure they weren't missing any hidden stockpiles of food. Death toll estimates vary widely for the famine, but according to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, seven million to 10 million Ukrainians, one-third of them children, died during the Holodomor. At its peak, starvation was claiming the lives of 25,000 Ukrainians every day. Those who survived did so under a veil of silence and terror. Informers were everywhere and many who opposed Stalin's policies were arrested or went missing. Vasil Szalasznyi, Kinal's friend and the son of a Holodomor survivor, recalls the story of a widow who disappeared from his parents' town after refusing to hand over her cow to the Soviets. "That story kind of stuck with me as a little kid," Szalasznyi said. "How could you do that to an old lady?" Kinal's father -- a vocal Ukrainian nationalist -- was among those arrested by the Communists. Like so many others, he never returned. "I don't know where my father is buried," Kinal said. After her father's disappearance, Kinal and her siblings were put in the care of her grandfather but he soon succumbed to the famine. Left to fend for themselves, the children subsisted on whatever they could catch from a nearby river. Beaten by Soviet soldiers if they were caught fishing, Kinal says her brothers set up nets in the river in the middle of the night, and supplemented their meager catches by foraging for crayfish. Sadly, the Holodomor was only the beginning of a series of hardships for Kinal. When war broke out a few years later, she was captured by the Nazis and put to work in Germany. "When the Germans came, we thought they would rescue us from communism," Kinal said. "But they stole just as much as the Soviets." She says the Nazis even dug up Ukraine's fertile topsoil and shipped it back home for use on German farms. After the Second World War ended, Kinal immigrated to Canada in 1950 with her husband and two young children. Her husband died in the 1960s, leaving her to raise her three children -- her youngest son was born in Canada -- by herself. Just like during the famine, Kinal found ways to make ends meet. She became a teacher and taught at a Ukrainian school in Oshawa, Ont., before moving to Saskatchewan in 1993. Through it all, Kinal has endured. Deeply religious, she credits much of her survival to her faith and, aside from a passing hostility towards some of Canada's more left-leaning politicians, she seems to have weathered the storms of her life fairly well. A spry and quick-witted 85, she brags about the accomplishments of her grandchildren, enjoys tending to her backyard garden and is happy to share a batch of freshly baked Ukrainian buns with a visiting reporter.

I.F. Here is the report of what took place from the RISU site: Ukrainian Orthodox Church of USA Participates in Special Program in UN Commemorating 75th Anniversary of Holodomor 27.11.2008, [14:38] // Foreign relations // On Tuesday, November 25th, 2008, Protopriest Bazyl Zavierukha and Protopresbyter Frank Estocin, at the request of Archbishop Antony, Consistory President represented the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA at a special program held in the United Nations, commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor – 1932-3 Genocidal Famine in Ukraine. Sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations, the program was held in the Dig Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium, and featured a review of the political machinations of the Communist Regime, which resulted in the death by forced starvation of 10 million or more souls – men, women and children. Opening and concluding remarks were given by Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the Honorable Yurii Serheiev. The position of Master of Ceremonies was held by Attorney Askold Lozynskyi, who presented recently discovered information pertaining to this, Ukraine’s darkest historical period. Survivor accounts were presented by residents of the New York and Philadelphia areas. “Harvest of Despair” – a moving and informative documentary about the Holodomor produced by Protodeacon Sviatoslav Novytskyi of St. Andrew Cathedral, Silver Spring, MD, was also screened. Of special interest to those who gathered for this event were excerpt from the Opera Red Earth – Hunger, the opus of Composer V. Baley. This commemoration is one of thousands, which took place throughout Ukraine and around the world at this 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor. The official blessing of the land upon which the USA monument to the victims of the Holodomor will take place on Tuesday, 2 December in Washington, D.C., with Metropolitan Constantine of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Metropolitan Stefan Soroka of the Ukrainian Catholic Church presiding. Special guest speakers at the ceremony will be the First Lady of Ukraine, Kateryna Yushchenko and Representative Sander Levin, chair of the US House of Representatives Ukrainian Caucus. The program at the United Nations was particularly important because of the participation of many diplomats from the nations of the world – at least ten Heads of Missions were present to express their sympathy with the Ukrainian people.

Dear Friends, The wife of Ukraine's President, Her Excellency Mrs. Kateryna Yuschenko, was honoured at a reception at Queen's Park, the Ontario Legislature, yesterday afternoon. It was a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor and Her Excellency spoke about her own relatives who suffered in the Holodomor. She mentioned Stalin's hatred of the Ukrainian people and how he was sorry he couldn't "do them all in." I was privileged to be introduced to her and she thanked me for assisting in the draft of the legislation now before the Legislature to declare Holodomor as an official provincial day of commemoration (Canada nationally, and the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have already done this). She gave me a a big hug and a commemorative pin and invited me to visit them in Kyiv! Alex
