The Hieromartyr Clement, Pope of Rome & the Hieromartyr Peter, Archbishop of Alexandria

Dear Eastern Catholic List Members,

I don't really know how to do a proper poll, but I'd like to hear the answers to a few questions from our Eastern Catholic brethren:

Who is celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception today (or in 13 days from today)?

Who is celebrating the Feast of the Conception of St Anna today (or in 13 days from today)?

Who is celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception tomorrow (or in 13 days from tomorrow)?

Who is celebrating the Feast of the Conception of St Anna tomorrow (or in 13 days from tomorrow)?

It would also be helpful if you could identify your Church or Diocese or Parish when you answer.

Dear Father David,

You will be unsurprised to learn that I fully expect to celebrate the Feast of the Conception of Saint Anna, when she conceived the Holy Theotokos, thirteen days from tomorrow.

If you would like a surprise, though, look in the December volume of the Holy Transfiguration Monastery English translation of the Menaion. But first be seated comfortably.

fraternally in Christ,

My UGCC Parish will also celebrate the Feast of the Conception of St Anna in 13 days from tomorrow [ though Father did announce it as the Feast of St Anna - problems with language I think smile ]

Fr. David,

The Byzantine Catholic Church in America (Ruthenian Metropolia) is celebrating the Conception of St. Anna. It is listed as a Solemn day on our Church calendars.

What's wrong with blue vestments?

Dear Mike,

If an Eastern Catholic Jurisdiction celebrates the Immaculate Conception on 8 / 21 December, what is commemorated on 9 / 22 December?

They are "not allowed" in the Latin Church. Especially in America. (There are a few exceptions, like some Spanish speaking countries and I think Bavaria. But they only apply to the Immaculate Conception and no other Marian Feast.)

I actually like blue vestments for Our Lady's Feasts, but they are not allowed in the Latin Church at this time.

Yes the wearing of blue vestments is a 'privilege' not widely granted. Permission has been granted to certain countries only. Certainly not to priests in the USA, as Dr Eric points out.

Fr. David,

Per my calendar, other Byzantine Traditions celebrate the Feast of the Conception of St. Ann on December 9th. The Metropolia of Pittsburgh celebrates it on 12/8 and 12/9 is the day of the Venerable Patapius.

I suppose a creative solution for many Eastern Catholic parishes would be to celebrate a Divine Liturgy on the evening of December 8th, and not specify whether it is on the 8th by extension, or on the 9th by anticipation. wink

Considering what goes on in the Novus Ordo, blue vestments are the least of anyone's worries. For ourselves, blue vestments and blue vestment materials are readily available, and anyway we don't have a hard-and-fast schedule of liturgical colors.

Back to the original topic ...

Melkites celebrate the Conception by St Anne of the Theotokos 9 December. It is a fourth class feast and so no pomp and little ceremony.

Blue as a liturgical color for Advent is also en vogue in some rather liberal Latin Catholic parishes, which I find much more annoying than blue on Marian feasts (which I nevertheless still do find annoying).
