Orthodoxy is not about the maintenance of the apostolic and patristic East, but the apostolic faith of the universal church (East and West) as handed to on to us. Maybe the old fear was that the liturgy will change, or married priests will be banned, or whatever; but that's not the issue.

Andrew, yes this is correct. It is not about "safeguarding our traditions," but it is about remaining Orthodox in doctrine and practice. This is why the EC Churches are not a model for us and cannot be a model for us. What is needed is for Rome to abandon those teachings which conflict with Orthodoxy, such as the teaching that the Pope has universal and supreme jurisdiction over the Church.
