The Ave Maria you heard was probably the English version of a German Song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellens_dritter_GesangI think later someone set the words of the Hail Mary in Latin to the song.

I just recently started attending a Byzantine Church. One of the reasons was that the terriable music in the Roman Church. It's not just Christmas time, it's all the time. Guitar Mass gives me a head ache, and I'm a Rock and Roll guy.
I moved to Virgina and the parish I came from in Texas had a beautiful pipe organ. The problem is I only heard it once is about 3 years. They had the dreadful guitars.
The Byzantine Church has opened my eyes to chant. I love it.

On other other hand, I've heard even worse stuff in an "Independant Bible Church", which seems to have been a sort of New England version of Southern Baptist. RC's are not the only ones musically challenged.
Edmac I don't know Edmac, around here most of the "Independent Bible Churches" are made up of most ex-catholics. Maybe that has something to do with it.
