Here is a photo of Metropolitan Jonah wearing a style of mitre I've never seen before.

Can anyone explain it's origins?

Our archimandrite who is the abbot of the Australian monastery at Bombala wears such a "Monomakh" mitre. It looks very attractive. I don't know the history but am guessing it is an outdated form of the Russian mitre (still used by Old Believers.)

Bishop John Shakhovskoy (of San Francisco) and later Bishop Basil Rodzianko (of Washington and then S.F.) both wore this type of mitre.

The original Monomakh was looted by Muscovy and is now in a Russian museum.

Which member of the Rurik family came down to take the family cap into their care in Muscovy-Rus?

It is not too late to buy your favourite bishop or archimandrite such a mitre for Old Christmas.

Most beautiful....

I find the gold ones especially exquisite.

Are these passed down, or are they bought by each new bishop?

Who actually buys them--the diocese or the bishop's family?

One must admit that the Orthodox clergy really know 'how to dress'!!!

OH ofcourse--I should have said 'Eastern' rather than Orthodox...sorry. ( I am assuming that was what they 'OY' was for-- wink )

Now, I would love an answer to my other questions from someone in the know...

I guess they're more common than I thought. I've just never seen a bishop here wear one until Vladyka Jonah.

Etnick,

I think that's what the Old Ritualists wear in their tradition.

Metropolitan Jonah wears an Old Mitre. Wonder if he'll return the OCA to the Old Calendar too! grin

Ung, You're right. I think there was a thread a while back that showed pictures of Old Ritualist bishops wearing the mitres.
