Fr. Deacon John:
I live in Houston. Mary and I are parishioners at St. John Chrysostom. I hope we will have the chance to meet your daughter (and perhaps you as well).

Wow, Deacon John, I'm impressed. Congratulations to both your daughters and to you and your wife, as well. (and my condolences on the new level of poverty about to descend on you ) Many years, Neil (who, blessedly, has a few years before the next round of collegians - the last round having finished a year ago)

Btw, a friend who works in campus public safety here in the northeast, and active nationally in the field, confirms that U of Chicago's police force is considered of extremely high caliber by its peers and its public sector counterparts. It's chief is a decorated 30 year vet of the CPD and the training requirements for its officers satisfy those for municipal police depts in Illinois.
Many years,
Neil

Neil- thanks. Yes, my wife and I are quite proud of our daughters' accomplishments. They've set the academic bar a bit high for the rest of our children. There are still 5 more to put through high school, the youngest will start kindergarten in August. I've still a long way to descend to new depths of poverty. If you're in the Phoenix area and you see a guy by the side of the road with the sign, "Will work for tuition!" chances are it will be me.

In more recent news, our eldest daughter was accepted to the Pritzker School of Medicine @ U of C... (had hoped they would be in Chicago together) but she has decided to attend Baylor College of Medicine, any Houstonians out here? -----------
Baylor's a good school, but driving around the medical district can be tough and parking can be expensive. Does she have an idea where she'd live? She would do good to live near a park and ride. I don't know if there's good housing near the light rail track.

Terry-
My wife and daughter will be visiting BCM toward the end of March to look @ housing. BCM has forwarded housing info to my daughter. The housing is within/near Texas Medical Center, close to the light rail.
thanks.
PS: If not sooner, I'll be out with my daughter around the 1st week of July to help with the move. I hope to make it to St John Chrysostom for Divine Liturgy @ that time.

Dear Fr. Deacon John:
If you are able to make it to St. John Chrysostom for Divine Liturgy, please let me know in advance. I do hope to have the chance to meet you. Also, please let me know if your wife and daughter will be visiting us on their trip around the end of March. My wife and I would love to meet them.

UPDATE
thanks again to all of you who responded.
My wife and daughter, Mercedes, did make it to Houston, but their schedule did not allow them to visit St John Chrysostom.
re: our Chicago visit-
my daughter, Melissa, and I will only be in Chicago during the week, April 23-24, to visit the University of Chicago. We're staying in the city.
The previous week, we'll be attending the open house for admitted students @ Georgetown University, April 17-19.
can anyone tell me what parishes are near Georgetown? I'm not renting a car, so I wont be able to travel too far.
thanks again for the help.

If you will be in Washington/Georgetown over the old calendar Paschal weekend, you owe it to yourself to go to the Ukrainian parish in Silver Spring, no matter what hoops you have to jump through to get there. Call Father Taras, get the schedule, and go. You'll thank me.

Fr Serge-
thank you for the recommendation, but after viewing the website and noticing that all liturgies are in Ukrainian, I'm going to pass. No offense to the Ukrainian brethren.

I think the Ukrainian Shrine of the Holy Family is the only Eastern Catholic Church in DC accessible via the Metro subway. It is about half a mile from the Brookland - Catholic University metro station. Liturgy is available in English as well as Ukrainian. http://www.ucns-holyfamily.org/index.htmlIf possible, you might visit the St. Josaphat seminary, which is next door to the Church. Also, the Holy Cross monastery is about a mile away, on Quincy St. The web page is old, as it refers to Metropolitan Stephen Sulyk, now retired about 8 years. http://rumkatkilise.org/stmhc.htm

"I think the Ukrainian Shrine of the Holy Family is the only Eastern Catholic Church in DC accessible via the Metro subway."
That is correct. However, Georgetown is not on the Metro line. One must take a bus from M Street down to Foggy Bottom Metro Station, take the Blue or Orange Line to Metro Center, and transfer to the Red Line to Brookland-CUA. Alternatively, one can cross Key Bridge on foot, walk to the Rosslyn Metro Station, and follow the directions above.
Either way, on a Sunday morning, the whole trip is likely to take you about 45 minutes to an hour. Alternatively, you could take a taxi. Traffic on Sunday is not too bad, and the fare should be something around $15-20 (however, I have not used a DC taxi since they switched to meters).
