Do Orthodox also stop fasting on the weekend? If we skip weekends how is it still 40 days? Not to say I'm begging to fast weekends too! What exactly gives you the idea that the Orthodox stop fasting on the weekends? No animal products or fish are eaten by the Orthodox on Saturdays and Sundays during the Great Fast (excepting the fish permitted on the Annunciation and Palm Sunday). What you may be thinking of is that there aren't the restrictions on the number of meals on weekends, as there are on weekdays and that food may be prepared with oil. Fr David Straut

Every year before Lent begins, the thought crosses my mind that I could be so happy as a Methodist. Nice, peaceful people, filled with warmth, no fast, etc. Then I have some chocolate and the urge to leave goes away. I am continually amazed at just how different people are from each other. I was born and brought up a Methodist. My father is a Methodist minister. I went to a Methodist University. I dearly love my parents and other Methodist relatives and friends. But I must confess that the thought that I'd be happier as a Methodist never, ever crosses my mind. Fasting gives a structure to my life, for which I am grateful. I never felt the same joy at Easter or Christmas as a Methodist as I have as an Orthodox Christian. I am sure that one of the reasons for this is the preparation I undergo to celebrate these Feasts that is bound up with the Fasts that precede them. Fr David Straut

Well then, I bow to your Methodist background, because it made you the wonderful and kind Orthodox priest we are blessed to know on this forum! May the Church, the forum, and the faithful be blessed with many more years of your presence and your ministry (*and that of ALL the other wonderful priests on this forum*.) Kissing your right hand, Alice

Father David:
Father bless!!
I was under the impression that Orthodox Christians did not fast on the Sundays of Great Lent. Am I mistaken?
Asking for your blessing and continued holy prayers,
BOB

Theophan, if I may answer in Father's David's stead, but referring to his early post (https://www.byzcath.org/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/310874/Re:%20Three%20weeks%20to%20the%20start%20o#Post310794).
Orthodox Christians--and Eastern Catholics of the Byzantine rite--do not fast on Saturdays or Sundays. But during fasting periods they may abstain. As Father points out above, the Sundays of the Great Fast (Lent) are days of abstinence, but not of fast.
Fasting here means eating one meal after Vespers (or Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts).

Fr David Straut The Methodists here are lovely people. Sometimes when I am overloaded with both school teaching and being music director at a Catholic church, I threaten to go join the Methodists, where I am sure my work load would be lighter. I usually point out, tongue-in-cheek, all the things I wouldn't have to contend with if I joined the Methodists. Of course, I am not serious for a moment.

Fr. bless, I'm a Byzantine Catholic,so I didn't know the Orthodox fasting guidelines. In my parish we do not have to fast Sundays because it's a Resurrectional day, and most parishioners don't fast on Saturday. Thanks for the information, and thanks to Pani Rose for the fasting guidelines.
This will be my third Lent and it is really my favorite time of the year because of the structure and very solid nudge to put God first. But Charles,in my crankier moments I really do understand your sentiments and ask why oh why did God drag me to this church and not the presbyterian one down the road?! Of course like everyone else here I wouldn't want to be anyplace else.I'm taking the fasting and abstinence slow so I don't burn out from beginner's zeal, but I do take it seriously and try to take it a step further each fasting season.
During Nativity Fast I watched movies about Jesus Christ (I particularly like Zeferelli's version and the Gospel According to John) and other morally wholesome uplifting movies.Since then it has been much easier for me to leave the TV junk alone. Even when I didn't attend church I refused to watch violent movies (even movies with purposeful violence) during Holy Week;it just felt... wrong.
If anyone can suggest lenten reading that would be useful.
And as for that chocolate, count me in!!!

It seems that in most years, some kind soul has posted a schedule for reading the "Ladder of Divine Ascent" during Lent. Each day, you read a different part until you finish at the end of Lent.

I also have it as a Word document, but can't insert it here. I will be glad to attach it to an e-mail for anyone who wants it.
