JOHN:

As someone who grew up near Punxsutawney and the Ground Hog but who has little love for winter, I come from among those who are not thrilled when we hear of more winter. grin So singing is definitely out for us. grin

I found an English translation of the Troparion and am posting it below, but I can't find the Slavonic or Greek originals. Perhaps Father David can post the Slavonic?

Troparion of the Holy Groundhog Basil – Tone 4

O holy groundhog Basil
Thou dost awaken from thy slumbers each year on the fortieth day.
And whenst thou emergest from thy hole and come above the ground
Thou openest thine eyes in search of the sun.
And if thine eyes see a shadow thrown by the sun,
Thou knowest that more winter is still to come,
And thou returnest to thy hole and sleeps for another six weeks.
But if thou shalt see a sky covered with clouds,
Then thou stayest awake for thou knowest that the spring is nigh.
Intercede always, O groundhog, for seasonable weather
Or we all shalt sleep through the forty days Fast that is ahead.

Can we get this in RDL English please? cool

Just to follow up, I went to St. John's Cathedral (ROCOR) for Divine Liturgy this morning. The entire Divine Liturgy was in Slavonic - including the troparia - and I don't know the Slavonic term for "groundhog". But I did hear "Punxsutawneyskogo" in the third troparion. That was strange since "Punxsutawney" is not in the English translations I've seen of the troparia.

Best wishes to all for Julian Calendar Groundhog Day!
