HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ARE NEVER GIVEN THE TIME OF DAY? LISTEN TO HER! TRULY A GIFT AND LESSON FROM OUR LORD TO THE WORLD. This was posted on WND. Contestant Susan Boyle singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical "Les Miserables," a song about a hard-luck woman whose years of misfortune have stolen both her youth and her dreams, Boyle brought the audience to tears and prompted a standing ovation. The judges were no less gushing in their praise. They titled it GOOD NEWS! Shock and awe: This church lady can sing Frumpy 47-year-old stuns 'Idol' judge, catapults to sudden global celebrity "Britain's Got Talent," a singing competition similar to "American Idol." When contestant Susan Boyle, who lives alone with her cat and claims she's never even been on a date, walked onto the "Britain's Got Talent" stage Saturday night, her double chin, frumpy appearance and gray hair elicited snickers and rolled eyes from the crowd, accustomed to the show's producers parading less-than-glamorous singers – like Boyle – as comic relief. But when Boyle opened her mouth to sing, Cowell, the mocking audience and the nation's television viewers were shocked. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=94936

She can certainly sing My understanding is that here was a small degree of birth injury and her schooling was to a degree limited. She looked after her parents and now lives alone . My hope is that the media circus doesn't get hold of her and 'improve her' She's a wonderful singer - may she stay unspoilt .

What a nice story! I remember the guy who won this competition a few years back. He got about the same initial reaction from the judges and audience and then he opened his mouth and WOW, did he have an amazing voice! Good luck to Ms Boyle, she is a great inspiration to people of all ages.

She has a good voice. She has accomplished much with this performance. Even if it is her last, she has much to be proud of.

I stumbled on to this moment with Susan Boyle yesterday since there was a link my ISP provided. So I watched the video and what happened. I especially noticed the look on faces when she was introduced as compared to "after she sang." From what I know so far she is a also a church worker who usually only sang in church. What a wonderful voice and what a wonderful moment to see the effect that God-given talent and precious person had on others there. I was really blessed and pondered it for a long time afterwards. Actually I watched it three more times.

Susan is indeed a Church choir member, although she has occasionally sung karaoke in local pubs. It was amazing to see the change of expression on the judges' faces as Susan bagan to sing. From EWTNews: EWTNews 17-Apr-2009 -- N Parish Choir Singer Becomes Overnight Sensation London, England, Apr 17, 2009 (CNA).- A middle-aged Scottish woman who sang in her Catholic parish’s choir for decades has become an internet sensation after a stunning performance on a British talent show. Susan Boyle, 47, appeared on the show Britain’s Got Talent before judges and a live audience skeptical of her ambition, her age and her plain appearance. The audience laughed derisively when she said she wanted to follow the example of West End star singer Elaine Paige. However, Boyle’s rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables won over the crowd and the judges. Her performance was broadcast on April 11, the day before Easter. A video of her performance posted on YouTube on the same day had received more than 13 million views as of Thursday afternoon. Boyle, reportedly a devoted Catholic from Blackburn in West Lothian, was born with a learning disability but dreamed of becoming a professional singer, the Times Online says. She credits her mother for advancing her musical education. “I was always musical - yelling when I was a baby, singing into a brush and singing in the shower,” she told Deadline Scotland. “It was my mum who got me into singing properly - she knew I had to do something with my voice because she knew I was talented. “She was the one that pushed me into joining a choir all those years ago, when I was about 12. I remember she told me to start with the choir and just see where it took me,” she added, saying it was hard to believe her success. Boyle limited her singing to church choir and Karaoke in order to care for her aging mother, the Times says. She stopped singing after her mother died two years ago. “I thought I would take a break - it seemed appropriate,” she told the Times. Boyle, one of eight siblings, has never married and claims she has never been kissed. Discussing the Britain’s Got Talent audience’s initial hostility, she said “Modern society is too quick to judge people on their appearances.” “There is not much you can do about it; it is the way they think; it is the way they are. But maybe this could teach them a lesson, or set an example.” According to the Washington Post, Boyle received a standing ovation at her parish’s Easter Sunday Mass. "We let out a wee bit of a cheer for her. We are quite proud of her," Boyle's parish priest, the Rev. Ryszard Holuka, said in a telephone interview. He described Boyle as a "quiet soul." "At gatherings and anniversary parties, she'd stand up and give a song," he said. "She never flaunted her voice; this is the first time it's been publicly recognized." www.ewtn.com [ ewtn.com] John

I was horrified at how people laughed at her at the beginning. People really are cruel, aren't they?
A happy ending, anyway.

I had been hearing about this all week and just watched it now. Wow! What incredible talent! What a voice! Praise God for his wonders! May God bless His servant, Susan Boyle, abundantly! It reminds me of a similar British talent show from a year or so back, in which this guy was laughed at as he said he wanted to sing opera. Then he sang and had a similar reaction. See: Paul sings Nessun Dorma [ youtube.com]. It is so good to see people realize their life's dream.

Alice, I TOTALLY agree with you. A lot of "reality TV" is just an excuse to find someone to poke fun at, or hate. Not all of it, but a lot.
I have my "reality" indulgences here and there, like many of us I'm sure, but generally I prefer to stick to programs on the Discovery Channel and such.

Susan Boyle was mentioned in at least one homily today. Deacon Greg Kandra of the Diocese of Brooklyn wrote as part of today's homily: Susan Boyle became an overnight sensation. In just one week, the video of her appearance has been viewed nearly 20 million times around the world on YouTube. She’s appeared on talk shows, been interviewed by papers and magazines. Oprah has invited her on to be a guest.
“I did this,“ Susan told a reporter, “for my late mother. I wanted to show her I could do something with my life.”
I thought of Susan Boyle on Wednesday, when Archbishop Timothy Dolan climbed the pulpit at St. Patrick’s at his installation mass and declared in his first homily:
“Everybody is somebody.”
Susan Boyle certainly proved that. No matter what others may think, the beautiful truth is that everyone carries the spark of the divine. Every life has meaning and dignity. Everybody is somebody.
That is why the greatest Somebody, Jesus Christ, surrendered himself on the cross – and why he rose from the dead. And when he finally appeared before his followers after the resurrection, his first message was a word of consolation to all those who feel frightened, or insecure, or alone – whether in that upper room, or in a village in Scotland, or in a walkup in Queens: “Peace,” he said. Peace. It was his first gift after he had risen.
In that same spirit, God continues to offer us another gift -- the one that gives this Sunday its name: Divine Mercy.
God’s mercy says to us, very simply, “You are loved -- no matter what. Because everybody is somebody.” The entire homily is at: http://deacbench.blogspot.com/2009/04/homily-for-april-19-2009-divine-mercy.html
