Father Anthony has provided me with his first attempt at a video podcast: Icons - Theology in Color. Eventually it will be added to the Multimedia section of this website (hopefully one of many). But right now we're in "testing mode".

Can you please watch the video and provide some feedback?

Here's the link.

Firstly, tell us if you can view the video cleanly - without a lot of stopping waiting for the video to load. The video is hosted on the same web server as the website while the other videos I have in the Multimedia section are hosted on a high speed server designed for videos. I may move it there if there are problems viewing. In your response include your type of access to the internet (broadband, dial-in) and whether you often have such issues (sometimes a wireless server connected to a broadband connection can slow things).

Secondly, tell us about the video. How can it be improved? Not just improved technically but even so far as improvement in the text that is read. Everything about the video is open to suggestions for improvement.

Many thanks!

John

It loaded quickly and played cleanly on a 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 running OS 10.5.7 and Safari 4.0.2. The soundtrack and the narration sometimes interfere with each other, and the sound is sometimes muddy. The first narrator should slow down just a tad. I get the impression that he is using just one mike, and occasionally, when he looks away from the mike, his voice fades out. The second narrator comes across much more clearly.

Doctrinally, the material is sound (I expected nothing less). I like the way in which the icons are analyzed using the circles to drive the narration. The second section, on worship with icons, is extremely useful for non-Byzantine Christians. Again, the narrator must slow down. If possible, I would expand on this section more. The third section on icon writing is also very helpful in explaining iconography as a sacramental vocation. The fourth section, going back to worship, could be incorporated into the earlier section on worship, to avoid discontinuities. Thus, I would reorganize the video into three sections: (1) background and the theology of icons; (2) icons in Orthodox worship; (3) iconography as vocation.

Overall, an excellent first effort.

I am passing the video along to some non-Eastern friends (Catholic and Protestant) to see what they think of the material. I will report back.

Is the video supposed to stream with the browser or open separately with a different program?

I had some trouble with it, I'll try to open it again when I get home.

How it plays depends on your browser. My Firefox plays it in a new tab. Internet Explorer 7 opens up a Quick Time program. Safari plays it in a new window.

It is posted here for technical review. Please do not attempt to re-post it to YouTube or anywhere else. We are quite capable of doing that if we want it.

... "and allowed the world to be corrupted" is as far as the video would go for me. I'm using a Mac and Firefox but am certainly not a computer expert.

I hope you can tell me what to do to see all of it, the beginning sounds wonderful.

Do you have a broadband connection? Also, how much RAM is in your Mac? Finally, give it a shot with Safari. I had no problems.

I am using a laptop with Vista on firefox, it was taking over an hour to download. I have plenty of ram and such on here, so it was very slow. Also, use AT&T high speed DSL.

Glad you posted this Pani...I have tried viewing this several times myself, although I am utilizing a desktop with windows 98 and internet explorer & plenty of RAM as well...I have closed out the "download" after 10-15 minutes each time...

I did get it this last time (12 minutes to download) and it is an excellent 1st attempt!!! I look forward to more!!!

On Kubuntu Linux with Firefox, it buffered, started playing (with chanting), and announced that it was finished.

I'm trying to download it directly; it states another 98 minutes at about 13k-40k/s

None of the people to whom I sent it had any problems running it.
