I've had intermittent throbbing pain around one wisdom tooth extraction site since last night. Most of the time its not bad, but just about an hour ago it was really, really terrible. That area is still the most swollen, so I'm HOPING that maybe it's not a dry socket after all, but just sore from the swelling or something.

Garrett, my friend,

My prayers, but I'm inclined to think you are experiencing a dry socket. Edema won't typically cause oral pain (it's mainly inconvenient) because the swollen tissues rarely compress the nerves sufficiently or in a manner that will have that effect.

Dry sockets result from the exposure of the boney structure inside the gum - when the blood clot is disrupted. It's properly termed an osteitis - an inflammation of the bone. Timing is about right - 2-4 days postop and I'm going to guess that it's a lower molar - not as common a problem with the uppers. Take your prescribed pain meds (not the time to go 'natural'), ice pack to the face (with a cloth covering over it) in hopes of numbing your face to a faretheewell without invoking frostbite, avoid eating/drinking anything of a temp extreme (and pb&j too), and call the oral surgeon first thing in the a.m.

Many years,

Neil

And what do they offer for a single?

I can answer that, too--a closet with a cot.

Yep, went this morning. Definitely have a dry socket. They packed it full of something medicinal and I'm supposed to come back Wednesday. I am still moving my stuff to my new apartment today, but I guess I won't move in for good until Wednesday now. I hope this doesn't last too long.

Prayers for your recovery. It seems things like this always happen at the worst of times.

I prefer the penicillins because I am extremely intolerant of any tetracycline based antibiotics, and alot of them are related to tetracycline.

I am allergic to penicillin and mycins. A few years ago when I had pneumonia, it was a challenge to find something I could tolerate. I don't even take flu shots because of the mycin antibiotic in them.
