Vladyka Seraphim was the choice of the All-American council for the office of Metropolitan. The Holy Synod "took it under advisement" and then elected His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman, to be our primate. Vladyka Herman has surprised many by his vitality and leadership. The Holy Spirit always leads the church.

I could put in some cheap shot about how Vladyka Seraphim can be your bishop, but I'll leave the polemics out of this discussion! It would be good to have at least one polemic-free discussion on this board, don't you think?

Bless me a sinner, Father Thomas,

Not really.

Otherwise, it would be the "Byzantine Bored." wink

And who is being polemical here if not the Administrator? (Did you see him come after me over St John Maximovitch? Orthodox in communion with Rome indeed . . .) wink

Bob Orthoman and I are the best of friends.

Isn't that real ecumenism?

Do we have your blessing and support?

Kissing your right hand, I again implore your blessing,

Alex

Don't they have "circular files" in the Eastern Catholic Church? I could send them a few if they need them. wink

GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST!

It makes one wonder why the Ukrainian Bishops don't borrow Dorothy's Ruby Reds and say to the Roman Curia:"BE GONE, YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE! Before someone drops a church on you!"

cool

JMHO...

Bless me a sinner, Father Thomas!

Our Latin university chaplain once said that any such letters from Rome should be treated by us (EC's) like people treat the chalk-markings of street youth on the sidewalks . . .

And he was an Irishman, would you believe!!

I pray for you and your priestly service in the Vineyard of Christ, and bow low as I say,

Kissing your right hand, I implore, once more, your blessing,

Your sinful servant,

Alex

Dear Byzantine Ascetic,

You've taken the time to educate yourself . . . about marriage?

There are books about it, but I always recommend dating a girl slightly older than yourself and with some experience, at least for the first little while . . .

So my uncles told me and I've never regretted taking their advice.

Dear Marko,

Congratulations!

I think you should do a series of icons that can be laminated on wood for mass reproduction.

That way people like me could afford your work . . .

What do you charge for an icon of one subject, say, 8 x 10 or so?

The response to this nonsense, if true, is simply to ignore it and to act like an autonomous (sui iuris) Eastern Church that happens to enjoy communion with Rome. If we act like we have balls the future will be strong. If not, we'll disappear like the castrata of old! As well we should.

This report, again if true, is stunning: have they learned nothing from what happened in North America in the early part of the 20th century? Have the functionaries in the Curia not read, inter alia, *Orientale Lumen*? Have they no sense at all of the enormously bad 'optics' of this in the eyes of Orthodoxy? And, finally, have they not seen the myriad polls done of RCs in the West in the last 30 years, in each of which there is, purportedly, majority support for a married priesthood? Are they really that obtuse??

Dear Alex,

We have married priests, a growing number it seems, in the Latin Church already.

I think it makes good sense so no it would not scandalize me.

I don't think the general discipline of a celibate priesthood will change in the immediate future. But I do think that in the growing numbers of exceptions to the general discipline, there is admission that this is of human origin and that it can be changed.

There are arguements pro and con about whether or not it should be changed, as you know.

After living through the changes in my church, not much would scandalize me, I think. I simply love her and her liturgy.

Do you think that that's good or bad?

Thanks for asking.

No

Ive educated myself in saying that if i ever
saw a Roman Priest with a wife, i would automatically know he was a former Anlgican or Orthodox Priest. To other people it would be a scandalizing shock because they woudnt know what to think, thats what i meant. God Bless

I don't think this will last in the future. This Vatican administration will not be there in some years, and the probable successors of Pope John Paul II seem more liberal than him and even willing to accept married priests in their own Latin Rite.

Without condemning the East or condoning the curial prohibitions on your married clergy . . .

I think in all of this discussion about whether married Latin priests would "scandalize" us, the magificent theology of priestly celibacy is being lost.

It should be particular to the West maybe, a special charism or something, but man I'd hate to see it go.
