Perhaps a vegan in Alaska stands out, but here in California we hardly notice one. Besides, a fasting person usually does not draw attention to the fast, so if they decline a particular food during a fasting period, if they don't mention that it is for the fast, then I don't think most people think much about it.

I work in the public schools; the orthodox kids stand out because during fasts, they can't eat school lunches. And the Russians observe the fast even on sundays of Phillips Fast and Great Fast. It's brutally obvious up here.

Further, a good many of the RO-OB's still wear traditional garments, and further set themselves apart that way; rukhavi and sarafani stand out. Some OCA aso wear them, and the veils.

California, maybe vegans fit in; don't know, as I won't go to "the land of fruits and nuts"... but most Alaskans wish CA would quit providing pro-death/pro-homosexual/pro-big government federal judges for the ninth circuit.

I could never eat them, either, but it had nothing to do with fasting.

They can bear a striking resemblance to orthodox Jews--with which my old neighborhood in Brooklyn abounded.

The current crop of school meals in Anchorage are pretty good. When I can, I buy school lunches.

Don't worry, most Californians (outside the LA and San Francisco metro areas) wish that CA would quit providing pro-death/pro-homosexual/pro-big government federal judges for the 9th circuit. Please, don't judge us by the inhabitants of San Francisco. Most of us just want to enjoy our families, the good weather, and the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables (without which fasting would be much more difficult).
