Came across this by accident; it's essentially a transcription by a son of his mother's oral autobiography. Mary Pawlak Anderson was born in 1919 to Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants in Mill Creek, PA.

I found it fascinating and thought that my Carpatho-Rusyn brethren from PA might also.

Many years,

Neil

I was trying to write a sermon foro this sunday (RCL: Epiphany 1 -
Episcopal). Wasn't getting anywhere so decided I'd check into the forum.

Thank you! Thank you! I tried to get some story telling from my grandmother (lived to 100) and my mother but it just never worked out. As I read this story, I cried, I laughed,, I grieved for what used to be and is no more. I'm 68 and my grandparents came from somewhere in Austria Hungary. I can relate to all the foods and many of the customs for the seasons.
We were considered Greek Catholics --- then Ruthenians? --- then ???

I have one living uncle but he's only five years older than me. Surely ,ife was difficult in those days but they certainly understood what it was to be community. We celebrated communion once a month until about the 1950's and after that every Sunday.

This reading has made my day. Bless all of you in the New Year.

I've just read the introduction and it has been a fascinating read. I'm looking forward to reading the rest.

As I mentioned in a previous post. PBS television had an excellent show called "The Extraordinary Journey" which tells the story about the immigrants from Eastern Europe who settled in northeastern Pennsylvania. It has interviews with Polish, Slovak, Ukranian, Lithuanian, and Hungarian immigrants. They described their culture religion, and traditions. I bought the DVD and found it excellent. It brought back many memories of our traditions, even though my family was not from that region.
