Hi...
I'm brand new to this forum. I participate frequently on the CAF forum and really want to learn about the Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholicism. I have great respect for the Orthodox Church and consider Catholics of the Latin and Eastern Rites to be sister Churches with the great Orthodox Church. So...there ya have it. :)

Shlomo (Peace to you in Syriac-Aramaic) SPN82756, Welcome to the forum. I have found that the members here are some of the best and brightest of Christians. One of the things that many of us here like to help people understand is that Eastern Apostolic Christianity is not just the Byzantine Holy Tradition. We can be divided as follows. 1) Antiochene-Edessan which has two major branches; the Eastern (Assyrian/Chaldean) and the Western (Syriac) branches: 2) Alexandrian which also has two branches; the Northern (Coptic) and Souther (Ethiopian-Ge'ez) branches: 3) Armenian: and 4) Byzantine which is divided into a Greek and Slavic major branches. From these come the Apostolic Churches we have today. A great intoduction to these Churches can be found at this link. [ cnewa.ca] It is to CNEWA (the Catholic Near East Welfare Association) and it contains one of the best overviews of all the Eastern Churches - Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Churches of the East. Thanks for that breakdown, but where does the Melkite / Syrian Orthodox Church fit into this framework? It would seem to be an intersection of the Syriac and Byzantine traditions.

Epiphanius, The Syrian Orthodox and Syriac Catholic Churches - both Oriental Churches - are counterparts and use Antiochene rites. (In early US documents, Melkite parishes are often mistakenly styled as "Syrian Catholic" - that was a misnomer.) The Antiochian Orthodox and Melkite Catholic Churches - both Eastern Churches - are counterparts and use Byzantine rites. The Melkites originally served according to the Antiochene rite but translated to the Byzantine in time and neither they nor the Antiochians retain any Antiochene vestiges of which I can think. Thank you for the help. I do believe that there are some Antiochene vestages within the Melkite Divine Liturgy, but I will have to investigate to find out what they are.
Off the top of my head I do believe that the Liturgy of St. James, Brother of the Lord is more Antiochene and Byzantine within the Melkite Church.

spn, Welcome to the forum. Being in Taunton, you're well-placed geographically to be able to visit a number of Eastern & Oriental Catholic and Orthodox temples. Our Directory's listing of Eastern & Oriental Catholic parishes in Massachusetts is complete. As you can see, there are Maronite parishes in Brockton, Fall River, and New Bedford, as well as a Ukrainian Greek-Catholic parish in Fall River. The Rhode Island listings aren't loaded as yet, but there are Melkite, Maronite, and Ukrainian parishes just over the border - if you want info on those, just let me know. There are links to Eastern & Oriental Orthodox parish directories on the web in this thread on our Parish forum. You'll find that those Churches are also well-represented in Southeast/South Coast Mass. and northern RI. Many years, Neil

Being accustomed to a fairly "easy going" Novus Ordo I'm very interested in the ritual. The Eastern Catholics and Orthodox seem to have held onto real beauty.
