Bless me a sinner, Father Archimandrite!
Fascinating!
And, of course, to "marry" someone initially meant the "Hail Mary" that was sung invariably at English Catholic weddings.
"London bridge is falling down . . .my fair Ladye" relates to the attack on London by the Danes in the ninth century and the last phrase relates to the people running to the Mother of God, "Our Fair Ladye" to invoke her aid.
There was also the "Bloody Vow" taken by Catholics (and also some Orthodox saints like St Dmitri of Rostov and others during the Kyivan Baroque) to defend to the death the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God.
This vow was particularly taken by members of the Brotherhood of the Immaculate Theotokos that was imported to Kyiv from Paris, France in the time of St Peter Mohyla.
The University of Dayton published a paper on this when I was still in high school and, unfortunately, I have lost track of it in my personal library.
