UKRAINIANS CALLED TO FULL PARTICIPATION IN CENSUS

by Metropolitan Stefan Soroka

Quote
April 1st is CENSUS DAY. The census
counts the number of people living in the United
States of America and gathers some statistics.
Only a person’s status is asked. Social Security
or other identification is not asked.

I urge you to write in “UKRAINIAN” in response to question #9, “race”. This directly impacts government funds allocated for various services and effects representation in politics. Writing in “Ukrainian” will positively help in dedicating assistance for the Ukrainian American community.

Participate and be counted as a Ukrainian on Census Day
2010! Thank you!

Sounds good to me!

So I, an Irish-Scottish-French-English-Sicilian mutt, should put Ukrainian as my ethnicity? wink

For those of you from ACROD, the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy and elsewhere who consider yourselves to be Carpatho-Russian, Rusyn, Rusin, Ruthenian etc... the CR-S offers the following:

"US Census - Be counted as a Rusyn! ON March 1 all Americans will begin to receive their census forms - and it's important that you and your family members get counted as Carpatho-Rusyn. If we indicate our Rusyn ethnicity on the census, the number of us counted as Carpatho-Rusyn increases since the last census, this increases our chances as a community to access federal funding and other programs that can support our culture in the United States.

So when you get your Census form, go to Question No. 9, check White (or your race) THEN fill in the words CARPATHO-RUSYN in the blocks provided under Some Other Race. While this may seem odd, this is the instruction we were given by the Census Bureau when we asked the question for how to capture our ethnicity on the form. So, be counted on your census form and tell all your friends, neighbors, church fellows and family who are Carpatho-Rusyn to fill it out too. If you write in Slavic, Lemko, Carpatho-Russian or Ruthenian there is no guarantee you will be counted as Carpatho-Rusyn. Let's stick together and be counted!"

I really want to put that I'm an Alaskan Native(I'm not), my husband is Asian (he's not) and each of my children are each something different, but I'm afraid a census worker will show up on my doorstep to personally interview us.

Although I'm a die-hard Nevadan, I answered the question honestly, based upon my heritage.

I put "Other, southern californian" for my wife, and "other, alta califonrian" for myself and our children.

I'm offended by government categorizing people by color in any form . . .

Vere did de phrase,

"Ten thousand svedes, vran through the vweeds,
chased by vun norvegian"

come from, now that you mention such things.

We had a couple of norwegian exchange students on my dorm floor junior year. I recall their shock when we took them to a "Liquor Barn"--a large (for the 80's) Safeway (grocery store) converted to a massive liquor store. One made us take him back with his camera, as he would need the picture to prove that such a thing existed back home.

Oh, and his reaction when the other one accused him of, "drinking like a swede" smile (12 ounces of Kronenburg Elephant, a barley wine, gone in seconds).
