WARSAW (AFP) - A plane with Polish President Lech Kaczynski on board crashed Saturday on landing at Smolensk in western Russia, foreign ministry spokesman Piotr Pszkowski said. "The plane scraped the tree tops, crashed and caught fire," he said on the private television channel TVN24. "On board were the president, accompanied by his wife, the army chief of staff and Deputy Foreign Minisiter Andrzej Kremer," he said. The plane, a Tupolev 154, had a capacity of up to 90 people, he added. The regional governor of Smolensk said there were no survivors. The president and his wife were on their way to a memorial service for the victims of the Katyn massacre which, in 1940, saw thousands of Polish prisoners of war murdered (primarily military officers), intellectuals, policemen, and other public servants by the Soviet NKVD.

working as i do @ a major airport, this kind of news has a particularly disturbing effect on me...

This tragic & painful event is perhaps a reminder to reflect on some things I don't particularly like thinking about:
1. the fragility & vulnerability of our lives, and
2. How we are supposed to be ready for the Lord since at any moment we could have to present ourselves before His awesome Judgement-seat. As it says in the Latin-rite sequence "Dies irae": "who for me, a frail man, will be pleading? when even the just are mercy needing?"
Through the prayers of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us!

It is both sad and ironic that the Polish contingent was on its way to a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre, in which several thousand Polish officers were murdered by the NKVD.
