Happy New Year my brothers and sisters!

May the new year bring some measure of peace and justice to our sisters and brothers in the homelands where so much persecution daily takes place.

May we all grow closer to Christ God and in some measure closer to each other through Him here on byzcath.

I consider this one of the advantages of having different calendars.... we can celebrate twice. grin

Elsewhere someone mentioned that "the Ethiopians will celebrate it on September 11th - the difference being that in Ethiopia, the September new year is their national new year as well."

Three celebrations for the New Year! I will need to order another dozen bottles of champaigne.

It will be a Happy New Year!

I love this old English ballad, granted, written for the Feast of the Circumcision and the Gregorian calendar (verse 2). Nevertheless, the final verses admonition

"Snake-like cast off your skin
Of evil thoughts and wicked sin,
And pure this year begin --
God send us a merry new year!"

is appropriate no matter which calendar we use or which day is New Year's Day.

THE OLD YEAR NOW AWAY IS FLED
England, 17th Century
TUNE: Greensleves

The old year now away is fled,
The new year it is en-ter-ed;
Then let us all our sins down tread,
And joy-ful-ly all appear.
Let's merry be this day,
And let us run with sport and play,
Hang sorrow, cast care away
God send us a merry new year!

Christ's cir-cum-ci-sion this day we keep,
Who for our sins did often weep;
His hands and feet were wounded deep,
His bless-ed side with a spear;
His head they crowned with thorn,
And at him they did laugh and scorn,
Who saving our souls was born.
God send us a merry new year!

And now with new year's gifts each friend
Unto each other they do send;
God grant we may our lives amend,
That truth may now appear.
Snake-like cast off your skin
Of evil thoughts and wicked sin,
And pure this year begin --
God send us a merry new year!

Beautiful Thomas!

May we who are called by His Name, open ourselves to his life giving Holy Spirit and allow him to change us, as the potter molds the clay.
