Dear Diak,

Very good point!

And in Ethiopia, the practice of placing one's handkerchief over one's mouth while addressing bishops et al. or even praying before holy shrines was a sign of respect whereby bad breath was covered up . . .

One always has one's handkerchief with one and it is also used there to wrap around hand Crosses so that our sinful human flesh doesn't touch the sacred object etc.

I wonder if the use of rose-water had a similar, latent function?

Dear Anhelyna,

You are wonder-ful as well! smile

Perhaps one day I'll get to meet Diak in Canada - and you'll get to meet him in Britain.

Although I daresay Diak would have to be careful about approaching a woman in Britain and saying, "Hello, I'm Randy . . ." smile smile

Slava Isusu Christu!

Alex,

It's funny you should say that, because one of my best friends, named Randy, met a rather talkative elderly lady on the Tube. She introduced herself and he said, "And I'm Randy..." to which she replied, "Oh, that's nice dear, but come now. We hardly know one another..."

He didn't get it at first, which made the whole scene even more amusing!

In Christ,
mikey.

Just a point about Our Lady of Lourdes.

Although a statue was chosen to depict her in the Grotto, in fact there is a Byzantine miraculous icon in France in the Archdiocese of which Chartres is a part - I forget the name, but have it at home - that St Bernadette formally identified as being "the closest representation of the way our Lady appeared in the Grotto."

The icon is very Byzantine and beautiful - but the local Latin Church authorities chose to ignore St Bernadette's testimony and erected a statue in the Grotto - a statue that Bernadette actually resented as having no similarity to the Lady she saw there.

Alex
Alex,
since you can't remember the name of the Icon, I am just going to have to do a search on the web for it... eek

You've gotten my curiosity up now and I won't be able to rest till I see the Icon.(not a bad way to spend a day after all.)

Dear Friend,

I've found it!

It is the icon of Our Lady of Grace of Cambrai:

http://www.udayton.edu/mary/questions/yq/yq236.html

It is the icon on the left that St Bernadette referred to as being the closest representation of her vision of Our Lady of Lourdes.

One can write to the Cambrai cathedral, Dayton has the address on its site, and they do sell copies of the icon with a fuller account of the St Bernadette story.

Cheers.

Alex,
thank you so much for finding the Icon...I tried earlier today, but was short of time.
We had a death in the parish this week and the family chose the traditional Byzantine(Ruthenian) funeral, including the wake in the Church. It was a nice surprise for me to come home this morning and see this post..

Dear Vie,

You are more than welcome!

'Tis a beautiful icon, as Anhelyna of Glasgow would say!

Holy Smoke! Krylos Leader, your right! wink What if praying was found to be cancerous, would we ban that too?

Juicing vegetables and fruits and afterwards using it as hair tonic and rubbing it onto your scalp prevents hair loss.
This might be true you know. Carmen Miranda had a lot of hair.

Dear Friends,

Actually, praying makes the kidneys work and warms the body wonderfully . . .

Some say it can act to detoxify the body of impurities as well.

Incense should always be as chemical-free as possible. Frankincense is the best.

Unfortunately, most universities that I know of will not allow you to keep a candle or oil lamp burning in the dorms, so I must make do with an electric lamp for now. I think He understands. wink

Dear Mor Ephrem,

How are you, Big Guy?!

In my old university, the lights were on, but no one was home . . . wink
