From Vatican Information Service: PAPAL MASS WITH PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW IN ATTENDANCE
VATICAN CITY, JUN 22, 2004 (VIS) - On Tuesday, June 29, Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles, the Pope will celebrate Mass at 6 p.m. in St. Peter's Square. Patriarch Bartholomew I, ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople, will attend the ceremony.
According to a communique from the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff, the patriarch will be received by the Holy Father at 5:45 p.m. in the Vatican Basilica and will then participate in the celebration. John Paul II and Bartholomew I will deliver a homily and pray the profession of faith together.
The celebration will take place 40 years after the historical embrace of Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Atenagoras I in Jerusalem in January of 1964.
The Holy Father will concelebrate with newly-appointed metropolitan archbishops upon whom he will impose the pallium. Note that this message first appeared with headline indicating that they would say Mass together. This corrected version appeared later w/ indicator in the header that there was a correction in the article.

This event leads me to a question that I've been curious about for some time. What is the general opinion of the Orthodox faithful towards ecumenical work with the Catholic Church? I see a wide variety of opinion on the web - from ecumenism is the work of the devil to the work of God, but I can't really guage what most Orthodox faithful really think.
For example, in the Catholic Church, I would say that the vast majority of the heirarchy is committed to improving relations with the Orthodox. Most laypeople don't care (sad, but true), a small number really are committed to it, and a smaller number are really against it. This is just my unscientific guess, of course.
I understand that most Orthodox might believe it is the Catholic Church that must make the concessions for unity to happen (just like most Catholics think the same the other way), but more importantly - do they care? Do they want unity to happen, or have they just written off the Catholic Church to heresy? Is there a difference of feeling between the heirarchy and the laity in this regard in the Orthodox Churches?

Something that is of interest to me is the possibility that many of those who do not hold a favourable view of ecumenicalism happen to be the laity. It is easy to blame the clergy, bishops and patriarchs for a stance they may take but how much of that is due to pressure from below?

I hope to celebrate the liturgy with the local Orthodox priest with him preaching and the both of us praying for the restoration of communion and for the Church and the World. I will commemorate Patriarch Bartholmeus in the Liturgy. Stephanos I

" My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior".
Once again, wonderful news! I do understand that Rome will reciprocate on the Feast of St. Andrew, and that this has become an annual celebration.
Dear Father, May I humbly ask that you also include in your prayers your ecumenically minded brothers and sisters on this forum that day.
In Christ, Bill

Glory to Jesus Christ!
A special conference of Orientale Lumen was held in Constantinople this past May. His All-Holiness, Patriarch Bartholomew, welcomed the group of Catholics and Orthodox pursuing unity to the Phanar, celebrated a Divine Liturgy, and addressed the group in a plenary session.
To express gratitude to the Patriarch, he was presented with a special engolpion commemorating the event which depicted Sts. Andrew and Peter in the medallion.
He was very pleased at the showing of gratitude by the Conference, and as he received it he said: "I will wear it in Rome".
Though there is still a long way to unity, it is amazing how much the dialogue has advanced during the last 15 years or so.
My prayers for continued efforts for unity.
Deacon El

One of the stumbling blocks to a speedier re-unification is the non-recognition by Orthodox jurisdictions not loyal to Constantinople of such an endeavor by the EP.
Some express disdain that the Ecumenical Patriarch is participating in these ecumenical activities, even calling him a "heretic!"
Should we abandon the effort of trying to achieve a "corporate re-unification" and assume the previous tact of conducting ecumenical talks with individual Orthodox Churches?

VATICAN CITY, JULY 1, 2004 (Zenit.org).- At the end of his visit to Rome, Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople invited John Paul II to visit the see of the ecumenical patriarchate, in Turkey. The invitation was made today during a farewell luncheon, after the patriarch's four-day stay in Rome as the guest of the Pope. The Holy Father was pleased to accept the invitation to visit the see of the patriarchate, which is in Fanar, in Istanbul, Vatican Radio reported.
Earlier, the two religious leaders signed a joint declaration in which they reaffirm their commitment to work toward the full unity of Christians in order to proclaim the Gospel in a "more credible and convincing" way. They also relaunched the work of the International Mixed Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.... --- The rest is on Zenit. This is pretty substantial, right? I must admit that I have not paid too much attention to ecumenical efforts between the Orthodox and Catholics until my conversion... But at least they were being civil to each other. I realize that even that has not always been the case... this is really cool! Right? Or is it just some sort of publicity move?

Hi,
The official texts (translation) of the Homilies are not out yet as far as I know. But if anyone knows, please do let us know!
It's hard enough for me to understand what the translator was saying on TV because it wasn't closed captioned (I'm profoundly Deaf, FYI).

Amado,
Thanks for the link, a very charitable and sincere homily in my opinion.

Dear James:
So do I!
Especially on the Holy Father's sincerity, which, as you know, has been put into question (polemics) by certain Orthodox quarters.
