Syriac Orthodox Malankara Archdiocese ordains FIVE new Bishops. Ordinations by the Catholicos His Beatitude Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas I.

Oxios! Oxios! Oxios!

Thanks to digital cameras, we can view the Pics here [syrianchurch.org] .

You really have to see these photos, absolutely beautiful shots of the ordination!

Thank you so much. A truly joyful celebration.

I did not see an iconostasis. Can you tell me if parish churches have an iconostasis?

The Syriac Orthodox never adopted the iconostasis (nor do the Copts, Ethiopians, Eritreans, Armenians, or Indian Orthodox or their Catholic counterparts), that is something the Byzantine Churches adopted later.

EDIT: Pardon me, I 'misspoke' - the Copts do infact have an iconostasis. The Syriac, Indian, and Armenian do not.

Coptic Churches that I have seen here in Australia all have an iconostas that is similar to the Byzantine one but has only the central door and no deacons doors. The screen also goes around on the 2 sides of the holy place with openings for the reception of holy communion of women on one side and men on the other. So effectively 3 sided. Pictures of the Ethiopian Churches in Jerusalem show the same. I think it is safe to say that the Iconostas is not part of either eastern or western Syrian liturgical traditions.

Wonderful photos of the ordination of the new bishops. I must admit I have never seen so much lace outside of an RC church. Just love the part of the ceremony where the Bishop is picked up chair and all by the clergy. Many years to them all!

Thank you for the clarification. I have been to Armenian and Syrian Orthodox churches in Canada and noticed the lack of an iconostasis, but was uncertain if the churches in the homeland followed suit.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Toronto has a very beautiful carved wooden screen with carved cherubim.

I've always found it interesting how the Indian Christians have such an affinity for hot pink vestments. The colors are just overwhelming to the eyes...there are so many and they are SO bright. Ouch! biggrin

Are they the only Apostolic Christians to use pink as a liturgical color? I somehow bet the Ethiopians do too...

As far as the perpetual argument about what constitutes "old rose," the color should be closer to the faded red worn by Latin bishops and not the color that His Holiness is wearing. This latter is "pink," not "old rose." Old rose is a faded red, not a red overwhelmed by white into pink.
