These two roses are both labelled "old rose" and both look pink to me: [ Linked Image] [ Linked Image]

Is it known if these 5 new Metropolitans are to be assigned anywhere in particular?

The five new bishops are Mathews Mar Theodosius, who will be auxiliary bishop of Kollam; Mathews Mar Aphrem, auxiliary bishop of Angamaly (High Ranges); Pathrose Mar Osthatheos, auxiliary bishop of Outside Kerala (Delhi region); Kuriakose Mar Eusebius, auxiliary bishop of Thrissur; and Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, auxiliary bishop of Niranam.

I'm not sure I understand the question.
Their names are given to them upon ordination, and is not their birth name.
Mar means Lord or Master, a title assigned to Bishops.

That bit I know but what name is Matthews? Is the S on the end a mistake and it is Matthew (after the Apostle).

The 'S' is NOT a mistake, and it is after Matthew the Apostle. In Greek and Syriac the original pronounciation of the name Matthew is Matthaios or Maththaios.

Michael_Thoma: I'd classify the top rose's core as "old rose" with it being "pink" at its edges. The second one is definitely "pink." I guess it's true here that pink, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. BOB

I see. It does not work in Engish, as Matthews is a surname. An Aussie cricketer who has made many runs in the Tests with India for one. I have always found the Indan usage confusing with names in front of Mar and after as well. so I was keen to know just what is a particular bishop's name, when their are so many of them.

Pavel,
Perhaps the "Mar" being in between the two names could be looked upon similarly concerning the title of "Cardinal," i.e. it is Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, not Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

I looked up the Syrian Orthodox Church usuage and Mar is on the front of the names. Having names at either end seems to be an Indian thing. Probably revenge for Australia thashing them at Cricket . Speaking of cricket I must check to see where we all are on the that. 'Cricket the game the keeps the world turning round.'

CIX!
A contribution from the Far East...
Those names appearing in front of 'Mar' are the surnames of the bishops, following the custom of some cultures to have the surname/family name first.

Yet these new Episcopal names are nothing like their former names.

Dear Bob you said: I'd classify the top rose's core as "old rose" with it being "pink" at its edges. The second one is definitely "pink." I say: You are correct... (as far as I can tell). Rose, as it has been known to me, has always been a very deep pink. Something falling between pink and violet, (not purple). Old rose would be a faded and slightly yellowed deep pink, rather than a vibrant one. Zenovia
