Does anyone know if Father Sergey Golovanov from Novosibirsk is still active as a UGCC Priest?

There a Wikipedia page on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergey_Golovanov

If you scroll down the page you will find three blogs, two of which are active.

On December 2004 Pope John Paul II appointed Roman Catholic Bishop Joseph Werth SJ as the Ordinary for Byzantine Catholics in Russia, who dismissed Golovanov from his duty in Roman Catholic diocese of Novosibirsk.

At the end 2005 Golovanov was dismissed from all pastoral work in Russia by Bishop Werth SJ and worked as journalist and translator. In the 2006-2007 he worked as a security watchman in a private security company.

Since June of 2007 he served as archivist and chaplain in the Diocesan Office of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Novosibirsk under Bishop Joseph Werth, SJ. Since October he is visiting researcher at the Institute of Philosophy and Law at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. He works at his PhD degree thesis “The eschatology of Gregory the Great according to his Moralia in Hiob” under the supervision of Prof. Eugene Afonasin. In August 2009 he took part in the 5th Russian Philosophy Congress in Novosibisk.

On 30th June of 2009 he was dismissed from his office by Bishop Werth and called from Russia by authorities of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). Now he lives in Omsk and translates of liturgical works of Fr. Robert Taft SJ.

Why was he relieved of his duties so many times?

The ecclesiastical bureaucrats are strongly opposed to any revival of the Russian Greek-Catholic Exarchate. Since Father Sergey is a staunch supporter of such a revival, that does not make him persona grata with the ecclesiastical bureaucrats.

That is sufficient to force a priest to become a security guard and then effectively impose ecclesiastical banishment?

Fr. Serge

I assume that this is because Rome wants the Pope to visit Moscow and the Patriarch, and such a 'revival' would certainly put the skids to such a visit and add fuel to the fire, so to speak, to things going on in Ukraine and elsewhere.

So Father Sergey follows the Master to the Cross. Is it any wonder we have a priest shortage? Young people have far more access to stories like these on the internet today and this isn't exactly a recruiting story.

Prayers for this good priest.
