I think you must mean no earlier than 8:30. You must be a bit north of here, as those in this diocese were to begin no earlier than 7:30.

Theophan and I are roughly at the same latitude, 40 degrees north. He is farther west by about 100 miles.

Now that Daylight Saving Time begins in March (and will NEVER fall on the Sunday of Pascha, thanks be to God!) our local sunset ranges from 7:25 on March 24 to 7:55 on April 24.

My personal rule is to begin at the next quarter hour following local sunset. There is enough bright twilight to keep walking outside (before and after the new fire) from being hazardous, but the stained glass windows block enough light that the candlelight is meaningful and beneficial.

By the way, for the first time in over a decade I was not able to keep the Paschal candle lighted from the new fire. The wind blew it out twice; first time I was only a few feet from the brazier so a relighting was no logistical problem; second time was at the door to the church with people now following in procession so an arificial lighter became an unfortunate necessity.

A Latin-rite friend living in Tucson tells me that at her parish there, on Holy Thursday, the priest washes people's HANDS, not their feet.

I wonder what the rationale for that is.

The Easter Vigil Liturgy also includes the Litany of the Saints, in which the people ask about 50 Saints for their prayers.

The Easter Vigil began at 8:45 p.m. and it was just starting to get dark. We read all 7 readings, and sang all 7 psalms, plus the Litany of the Saints. It was approximately 12:15 when I finished the organ postlude. We do nothing the easy way. grin

It is important to note that, if the washing of the feet is to be done (it is voluntary), liturgical law specifies the washing of the feet of 12 MEN.

This is not the case in the Byzantine tradition: this tradition provides for the washing of the feet among nuns (who are, of course, women). There is no particular reason to prohibit the use of the same service for lay women. d

Very interesting! Who does the washing? Mother Abbess, or the priest?
