Why, indeed. It's what I habitually refer to as a Novus Ordo-inspired neo-latinization. mad It's even worse among the Maronites, where this versus populum business has become the rule, and I believe it's pretty much the same story with the Syro-Malabars (perhaps with the exception of one Archdiocese in Kerala). The practice seems to have invaded the Coptic CC as well. frown

Are the Syro-Malankara Catholics free from these latinizations?

By the way, facing the people or not is not the issue. Traditionally Christians pray facing east. For instance, in St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican the Pope faces east, which means facing the people.
