About 20 years ago, a short-live series began with surveillance, and then a chase and takedown of the drug dealers. By a priest and a nun. The priest then dragged the miscreant to the parish line, and threw him across it, with a warning.

Unfortunately, Helltown only ran a single season.

That one passed under my radar. Whoa! No availability via netflix, but the wikipedia establishing info was a hoot. Did the series tank due to lack of interest or controversy? And the Sammy Davis theme ( a familiar nod to it's star, Robert Blake former series, Barretta)...zounds! I have heard that in later life, Sammy Davis flirted with anton lavey's church of satan!

As I remember, the program was cancelled because it stank. To the high heavens.

I don't remember much about it other than the opening sequence I described, the street-smart nun, and being disappointed it ended. And most of all, a theme of forgiveness and reconciliation.

It seemed to me that Catholic-themed programming rarely caught on.

Fr. Dowling Mysteries played by Tom Bosley laugh

Loved that show!
Fr. Dowling [http]

Father Frank Dowling is a Catholic priest who continually stumbles over murders, abductions, and other high crimes in his hometown, Chicago, Illinois. He is assisted by Sister Stephanie "Steve" Oskowski, who does much of the legwork for Frank. Sister Steve is a streetwise nun who grew up in a rough housing project nearby, so she can hotwire a car and handle firearms with ease. She knows the language of the streets and converses in it fluently.
Father Philip Prestwick is the ladder-climbing assistant to the Archbishop, who just happens to drop in before meals, prepared by housekeeper Marie Murkin, who provides comic relief.
Father Dowling has a brother, Blaine, who, although they are different ages, looks exactly like him (also played by Tom Bosley). Blaine appeared in only three episodes: "The Face in the Mirror Mystery," "The Woman Scorned Mystery," and "The Fugitive Priest Mystery." Blaine Dowling is a thief and con artist who isn't above framing his brother for his crimes.
A famous catchphrase of Father Dowling is when he is recorded asking Father Phil: "Father Phil, could you take 10 o'clock mass? I've got a murder to solve."

Actually, it was less than that--as I recall, it was canceled in mid-season.

The early episodes were actually good, then the writing deteriorated horribly. Fr. Rivers went from being a no-nonsense priest to a total buffoon. Blake later refered to Helltown as the low point of his acting career.
