"The mercy of God is hidden in sufferings not of our choice; and if we accept such sufferings patiently, they bring us to repentance and deliver us from everlasting punishment."

Indeed. My priest often says that we are 'icons' of Christ and when we look at another, we are looking at an 'icon' of Christ.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

There's something I think people may forget about the whole icon conflict, and that's how necessary it is we do see past the material and to Heaven, and how prone, the more lifelike things are to be dangerous.

'When your brother attacks you, whatever the insults are, if you get angry at him, you are getting angry without cause. Even if he were to pull out your right eye, and to cut off your right hand, if you get angry at him, you are getting angry without cause. Yet if he were to try to take you away from God, then be angry.'

'Who could ever understand fully that eternal weight of glory which a single moment spent in cheerfully carrying a cross obtains for us? Who could understand the glory gained in Heaven by a year, and sometimes a whole lifetime, of crosses and suffering.'

"When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgement, I've often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of lonliness. You have no advocates, you are there standing alone before God - and a terror will rip your soul like nothing you can imagine.

But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there'll be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world - and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, "Spare him, because he loves us" - and God will look at you and say not, "Did you succeed?" but "Did you try?"

- Henry Hyde

I post this in memory of my dear friends Fr. Paul Marx, OSB and John Everett, former director of St. Joseph's Helpers and the White Rose Women's Center in Dallas (reposed May 5, 2006)

This is a good quote, and something we need to remember at times of trial, small or large, temporary or permanent...

This life is but a small journey.
