Since they went to pay content, I switched papers, but this is typical of western 'progressive' reporting about parts of the world that are different from those associated with the North Atlantic and Nordic Europe.....

Overheard by a fly on the wall of the newsroom: "Let's do an article about Greek Fascists for Orthodox Good Friday....Great idea, you know how those on the fringe of Europe really are...."

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/13/w...opening-in-greeces-woes.html?_r=1&hp

I don't know how prevalent such a mindset is in Greece, but the same neo-Nazi crap can be found in various coded factions in British, German, French, Italian, Spanish and American politics these days - just to mention the first few western countries that came to my mind.

Why pick on the Greeks this weekend of all weekends? Probably because the Times' editors regard eastern Christianity (Orthodox and Catholic - no matter to them -ask any Ukrainian about that distinction in western eyes....) as dark and foreign and a place which harbors such attitudes. (Of course the musings of some who call themselves easterners on certain blogs etc...can cause such misconceptions...However - read the encyclicals of the both major eastern Orthodox Patriarchs on issues like social and economic justice, the environment etc....) Oh well..enough venting for now...on to Church..

Let's work harder this Paschaltide to clear the air and dispell such stupid stereotypes.

I think you are correct in pointing out that these European countries are not the United States. Americans, especially in government, make assumptions that the rest of the world is just like us. It isn't. Now if our leaders could just learn to mind our own business.

I was not speaking about the references to nationalism and nationality - rather I was annoyed with the focus that the article put on the neo-Nazi aspects of that party - and by reference the New York Times' typical association of religious belief with totalitarianism.

I think it is entirely possible to be a nationalist while not being a fascist or an admirer of the abuses of the Third Reich and a holocaust denier. Such thinking does not reflect most nationalist Greeks whom I know nor, in my opinion, is there any room for fascism and neo-Nazism in the heart and soul of any true believer. That ideology is Christ-denying and was no friend of the Church.
