Among the things that we have to keep in mind is proximity to large urban centers. Central Indiana would be directly in the path of probably the worst Urban center in the country, Chicago.

Texas is good politically, but there is the problem of water and water rights, combined with a climate that is incompatible with Slavic physiology.

If Utah wasn't polytheist Valhalla, it would be an option. Do you want your children associating with polygamists who wear weird underwear?

Look North, young man!

Inexpensive land with potential for tillage
Remoteness from urban centers
Waterfront with access to food fish and water rights
Unrestrictive local government and lack of charters and loose or nonexistent zoning.
Unimpeded second amendment rights.
Four seasons without the excessive humidity associated with the South.

Maine should be a non-starter for anyone who serioulsy intends to homeschool. As a homeschooling father I STRONGLY recommend those intending to freely and fully educate their children in the orthodox faith and have control of your curriculum without unnecessary school board and/or State educational department intereference to look hard at the first and second regulatory tiers presented above for location.

I do agree with Deacon Randy, that homeschooling is the one big drawback for Maine. It will boil down to the needs of the community. There is also the possibility of founding a private school, much like the Amish. Pennsylvania home schooling laws are even more restrictive than Maine's, but my Amish neighbors have found a workaround. Much will depend on what the needs are of those interested. Since the only commitments so far are unattached males with no progeny that we are aware of, it remains a moot point for the time being. (Oh, on the odd chance that if you look like Kate Beckinsale, enjoy canning large amounts of produce, cleaning fish and plucking chickens, know how to cut dovetail notches on fir timbers, and can change the rings on a 1958 Massey Ferguson, pm me!)

The perfect candidate.

1. Thanks God.
2. Drives Tractor.
3. Doesn't look like Earnest Borgnine.

Among the most experienced, down-to-earth, yet heavenly Christian community builders I have first-hand experience of, are the Bruderhof of Rifton,NY and elsewhere. Heretical Anabaptists, they have much going for them in terms of commitment to an apostolic Christian life and educating their young in an wholesome environment. Check them out at Bruderhof [bruderhof.com]

I have looked into the Bruderhof. Yes it works for them, but if I had to choose between them and the Old Order Amish, my vote goes to the Amish. The Bruderhof hold no private property, and pretty much live a socialist communal lifestyle, as opposed to the capitalist Amish. The Socialist holiday resorts of Kolyma and Magadan are still too close in memory to allow me to even entertain socialism.

Familial response has all been positive so far. What justification could there be NOT to do this?

The weather and funny underwear (long johns in the winter - thongs in the summer)

It is more important how you live not where you live . the grass isn't always greener.

The whole point is to build a community to protect our children from the anti-Christian society that is rapidly engulfing us. You want to try to explain to your 5 year old why the little boy down the street has 2 daddies or 14 mommies? Many others than myself are predicting that within our lifetime, it will be illegal to be a practicing Christian in this country. The hand writing is on the wall for those that have eyes to see.

I never thought of either community as ideological; that being their glory. I detect that you are. In which case I would not want any part in what you have in mind. Capitalist Amish? I'm not sure they'd appreciate that description, but I could be wrong. I know the Bruderhof are not socialist, although it may superficially appear that way.
