Fr. Kurt Burnette has been named Bishop of Passaic. He was once a parishioner at my parish.

Many years!

Many years to Bishop-elect Kurt! He was our pastor.

Sorry, Passaic, we here don't mean to send so much envy your way. Now we know why Metropolitan Skurla stole him from us. :p

Wonderful news and a good choice! The direct link didn't work (for me, at least) so here is the text:

BISHOP-ELECT BURNETTE
Bishop-elect Burnette was born in England, in 1955. He was ordained in 1989, for the Holy Mary of Protection Byzantine Eparchy of Phoenix.

He holds a doctorate in mathematics and a second doctorate in civil law. He earned a licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. In his priestly ministry, he served in several parishes. He was assistant chancellor and eparchial economos and consultor. He also served as a police chaplain and was the judicial vicar and defender of the bond for the eparchial tribunal.

As a university professor, from 1978 to 2004, he taught mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering in several American universities, including one of the first classes in the world on quantum computing at the University of Portland.

He was named rector of Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary in 2012.

Axios!

I hope that an invitation to his enthronement is extended to Bishop Gregory of the ACROD as we have been exchanging such visits with regularity in recent years!

I went to Passaic from NYC in 2007 for Bishop Skurla's installation. I definitely hope to go to Passaic for the new bishop's ordination! I've never seen a Bishop ordained in any rite!

I was amused to see Rocco Palmo refer to Byzantine Catholics as "Slovak" in his post on the appointment. Some are... but that's hardly generically the case.

I understand Bishop Kurt's family transferred to the Byzantine Church. Did they transfer from Roman catholics? Where did he go to seminary and when?

May he be a blessing to the Eparchy of Passaic.

According to the posted biographies, for Bishop-elect Kurt: he went to the seminary, in Pittsburgh. I'm also reading some of the books he left, in St. Irene, via its current pastor: Frank Knusel. One of my favorites is "Shown to be Holy: An introduction to Eastern Christian Moral Thought"
