A corrupt, but non-ideological dictator was far more in the best interests of the west than an Islamic dictatorship. Iran will have to jump in to protect the Shiites and their shrines and the Turks to secure their borders.
Iraq was invented by the British Colonial office at Versailles. It is more than ironic that it faces collapse as we approach the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the war to end all wars. Of course, most Americans know little, nor care much, about history... but the vengeful peace, which led up to the great war in 1938 and the brutal Balkan war of the 1990's is fraying at the seams and there remains a great deal of unfinished business across the Mideast and in eastern Europe resulting from the fall of ancient empires in 1918.
