Okay, I have a question.

I see Eastern Catholic (specifically Ruthenian and Ukrainian Catholic) hierarchs with the "three bars," for lack of a better word, on their omophoria all the time. I don't think I've ever seen these three bars on Eastern Orthodox bishops. What's the deal? Why the difference?

Dear Teen,

The three bars are also worn by bishops of the EO Church on their omophorion. Each bar stands for one of the major orders of the priesthood. A deacon has only one on his orarion, a priest has two on his epitrachailion, and the bishop three. They are generally rows of fringe. It is a an easy way when not fully vested to identify who is who. If you notice icons of saints of priestly rank you will also notice this.

I hope this helps.

In IC XC,
Father Anthony+

One interesting tidbit of info:

In addition to the usual three on the bishop's omofor, the Ruthenians and the Ukrainians will keep adding additional bars for archbishops, metropolitans, patriarchs, etc. So, I think that Metropolitan Basil Schott has four bars on his omofor, and Major Archbishop/Patriarch Lubomyr Husar has five.

Father Anthony and Dave,

Thank you for the information. I've honestly never seen this on an EO cleric before. Are there any pictures available where I could see these three bars on EO clergy?

Dear Teen,

Try the OCA website. They have a photo gallery that seems to be very good.

I take it then, after all the posts and dire predictions of doom and gloom, that you yourself did not go to Uniontown?
If so, you will have to wait and see like me the rest of us who could not be there this year.
If any official announcements were made by Met. Basil, they will be announced in the parishes in due time.

Many thanks to Joe and John for the pictures! Thanks Jeff for the report! I enjoy seeing what I missed from 2200 miles away! Wish I could have been there. biggrin

My people are in two pictures so far. Except all you can see is the back of my head.
All I can say is, I'm going back next year (as long as work permits..ah the joy of being at the rich man's mercy).
The whole otpusty is awesome.
Like the song, Palomniki Uniontowns'ki
Come to Uniontown... everybody..next year.
I especially enjoyed the Sunday candlelight procession. That was awesome.

John,

The Mitred Archpriest is Rev. John Kachuba. He is a vocation from my home parish.

Well, it turned out that we "old- timer pilgrims" got a last minute reprive, thank God! It would have been (will be) absolute caos! Still didn't like the "token" (one Marian hymn, one Mnohaja L'ita) in Slavonic at the Sunday 4:00 pm Pontifical/Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, but that is very typical. And what tha heck was that Moleben suppose to be?? It had a few parts missing. Either do an authentic, 100% Eastern Christian service, or restore the original-adaptation of the Moleben to Jesus Lover of(Sacred Heart of Jesus) Mankind (shouldn't that be "Who Loves Us ALL, or Loves ALL People). Nothing more moving than the "Suplikaci" in Church Slavonic. I just love the late Prof. Daniel J Kavka's "Suplikaci" selection on one of Holy Ghost's (S. Philly) old albums.

Good to see fellow Forum lukers and posters (you know who you are wink ). Hey, I even wore my special "Otpust Shirt" and still, no Cantor/MCI police ever showed up escort me off MT. Macrina, where wer they :p ?

At least we "Stara Slavans'kohophil's" had a beautiful hymn sing on the barrack porch. Cantor "Janko" never disappoints any Mt. Marcina pilgrim who stays up to sing on the porch, although the number of pilgrims attending Mt. Macrina Otpust overall is still dwindling and that is really sad.

Ung,

For the sake of liturgical geeks like me, can you please describe the "new" Moleben (not the one to Lover of Mankind/Sacred Heart)?

Dave
