Could someone tell me if there is a way to distinguish "Pantocrator" icons from "Jesus the Teacher" icons? Both seem to use open and closed books. Both seem to us the Jesus Christ monogram outside the halo etc. Thank you. Pilgrim George

Dear Pilgrim George,
First of all, welcome to the Forum! (Are you the Pilgrim George about whom we have heard so much about?)
In terms of differentiating between icons of Christ, it is usually the text of what is written on the open Gospel Book held by our Divine Saviour that indicates what type of icon it is.
I've seen Pantocrator/Hospod Vsederzhytel icons of Christ (for so it is written in the top background of the icon) and yet the icon is actually that of, for example, Christ the Lover of Mankind because the scriptural text speaks of His love for us (e.g. "I give you a new commandment to love one another even as I have loved you").
Icons of Christ the Teacher could have the Beatitudes or a portion of the Sermon on the Mount on the open Gospel Book and the like.
But icons of Christ with closed Gospel Books would usually and more specifically indicate the nature of the icon in the written title (e.g. Photodotis or Light-giver and the like).
Icons of Christ the Lover of Mankind, in Greek, would have the "Ho Eleimon" title or "All-Merciful" and the icon of Christ the All-Merciful that I have in my icon corner also has symbolic hearts on the closed Gospel book. Christ's Right Hand also APPEARS to be pointing to His Wounded Side/Heart.

Thanks, Alex, for the information: it will help in the proper identification of some of the many icons of Christ we have inherited from a great tradition. Yes I am the Pilgrim whom the Lord enabled to walk 40,000 miles through 41 countries, in sandals made from rubber tires, without money (depending completely on Divine Providence) since 1970. I am now in the Butler, PA, area in a poustinia that the Lord has provided. It has a workshop for woodworking and I just completed an icon of the Sinai Pantocrator, 17" x 22" (copied image), so that has led to my question. Thanks again. Slava Isusu Christu! Pilgrim George

I recently attended a Divine Liturgy (in the Catholic Ruthenian Rite) with the Baptism of a two week old baby girl. The officiating priest took the baby around the altar three times after the service. I thought only baby boys were taken into the sanctuary. Has a new policy been initiated? Pilgrim George
