We are already tax exempt. This registration simply puts us under the authority of the State and tends to intimidates our priests and our people from speaking on some issues.

So, why do we do it?

Most states will not exempt from sales tax without it. You can't benefit from Good Samaritan laws protecting food pantries without it. You can't get non-profit bulk mail rates without it. It ensures donations are tax deductible for donors.

You're right that churches are tax exempt without registration, but not registering doesn't exempt them from the rules about political activity. They can lose their tax exemption even if they don't register.

I think your premise is wrong. Without registration, 501(c)3 organizations are not tax exempt.

No he is right. Go read the IRS docs. They state churches are automatically tax exempt. But that is for the Feds. The 501(c)3 comes in to play for the states.
